Quick Coil Conversion Question
Saturday, January 28, 2012 1:02 PM
After a ton of searching and reading today, I just want to verify that I have this all right. So for doing the 2.2 coil conversion to a 2.4, you need the ICM and coil pack assembly from a 98 2.2 along with the 2 plugs/pigtails that go into the ICM. Then just match the wire colors and tap into the stock 2.4 plug. Don't use the 2.4 ICM. Use MSD coils 8824 instead of the stock 2.2 ones.
Is that correct? I saw some posts showed using the MSD interface modules with the coils, but if using the 2.2 ICM, those shouldn't be needed, correct? This is just for a coil upgrade, not adding a DIS2 or anything.

Lol. The wires going to the coils on the 2.2 are the same wires going to the 2.4 ICM. You dont need it. Just match wires.

Is it just the 98 2.2 for some reason, or any 95+ 2.2?

Since they all use the same coils, any LN2 can be the donor.

I remember only going for 98 and up. Dont remember why.

Good thing I decided to visit... So, here's the skinny:

The older ICM had the crank-position sensor feed to it, then the ECM, while the '98+ read directly to the ECM/VCM. Why they didn't go the second route in the first place... It's beyond me!

As for the coils: I've heard disappointments from LSx Buick Turbo-6 builders about how MSD coil-packs aren't that great in a system without the "box", and how Accel is the choice. Then, I've heard how best results are had with the GM replacement coils. I imagine the Accel's are probably the choice to go with on Twin-tower DIS, while the GM pieces are preferred with "indie"-style DIS.

Nice, good to know. Thanks. A quick search shows the accel coils to be 45,000v whereas the MSDs are only 40,000v.

Ya I would like to know what the actual measureable gain is here, I went with the dis box msd coils and interfaces on my ohv build and I felt as though it was a waste of 800 bucks....

Have you re-tuned your car since installing them? I know that's a silly question, but sometimes a gain isn't seen until after adjusting for it. But then, my '88 Ramcharger just turned-around & delivered (20% mileage increase, starts with barely cranking it over) once it was installed.

Ya I sure did. That is before I swapped to the eco.
