I'm pretty sure my alternator is bad because its whining a lot at high rpms.
Noise usually comes from the bearings that can be replaced. If your alt is in good shape (generates power ok) it may be worth replacing the bearings before they freeze and cause you a headache.
In short, yes its bad. Its also bad if your engine knocks. Or if a wheel falls off.
