Oil pressure gauge Mech vs Elect
Thursday, September 27, 2012 7:43 AM
Ive had my electric Autometer oil pressure gauge forever and it works fine. I was thinking about switching over to a mechancial gauge just to get rid of the ugly electrical sender and help clean up the bay.

Which do you guys prefer? any issues with a mechancial gauge? Is the only difference is that a plastic hose reads the pressure?

Ive literally never seen one in person before lol

Thanks.

My z24 has an electrical one, and the dads is mechanical on his T-bucket. Both seem to work great. I like electric, because if anything leaks it will be in the engine bay. The dads could leak inside the dash at the sensor junction...or anywhere in between.

Mechanical do seem to be a little more precise.

Thanks Mike, I am kinda afraid of the line breaking somehow and leaking, if I see it too late, boom there's my engine.

I like how I only would need 1 tee for it to install with my stock pressure sensor, unlike the many I have on it nowfor the electrical gauge HAHA

You can always run a braided line to the gauge which will save you possible leaks. I like the electric due to having no oil onthe car though. Look at auto meters new senders though. Very small and not an eye sore at all

Yeah I have electric but that was my reason for not going mechanical as well. Didnt want to risk fluids leaking into the cabin and making a huge mess and not finding it right away. Senders could quite possibly fail as well so its kind of hit or miss. My electrical sender is small so im not too worried about it.

Thanks guys. It looks like ill be sticking with electrical. The damn braided line is more than the gauge itself.

Philly, I can not find the smaller sender you mentioned.

Same here. I'm interested to see it. The one I have is pretty large.

I have both mech and elec on my car. The mech is in the engine bay because it's more accurate. The elec one is just to not have oil inside the car, although now it doesn't matter with the Accusump on the passenger floor.

I'll take a pic of mine and post a link to it when I get off work.

It's about 1/3 of the size.

Sounds good, thanks.

You could not run the stock one. Unplug it. The car will start fine without it.

put it clear in the back oil rail on the block. out of side out of mind and you'll get the better pressure reading anyway.

I have had both types on my cars. I feel the electrical is a cleaner look, because of the hose having to be routed inside the car.

I now have my electrical sending unit on the back of the block out of site and mind.

atta boy. if i could at this point i would mount the one you sold me to that location but with the autotragic and header in the way its an impossibility at this point. guess i'll have to put it on the new block when i melt down four pistons, fry the rings, and drop a few valves here soon.

Which plug in the back of the block is for oil?

towards the passneger side under the header.

also want to say I have seen very little to no difference in readings between electrical and mech.

Here is the sender I have. It came with my Autometer cobalt oil pressure gauge.

This is the closest I could find. But im sure I saw it on the Autometer rack last night when I was getting my parts for my fuel pressure gauge.

yeah my autometer phantom II gauge came with the sender and it was tiny as well. Mine is eco obviously but is off the front of the block with my oil feed for the turbo.

I have seen those on Jegs's site but they are all for the fuel pressure gauges. Hmm those are very slim, id love to have one of those.

The only thing is I dont know what series gauges they work with. The new senders are 3 wire versus the 1 wire of the old ones.

Gotcha, yea Im using all Z series so that may be why im not seeing that sender.

I see 3 plugs
the one on the passenger side is the smaller one and its on the block in line where the timing chain tensioner is.
2nd one is more towards the drivers side up top angled down at a 45* angle
3rd is the one flat against the back of the block more in the center.

i run the electrical gauge as well... just bought the relocation kit from Autometer and ran the sender up in the cowl.

i've heard horror stories of the larger sender causing breakage when running straight off the block/head due to vibration. I wasn't willing to chance it.

I have the car apart currently and can snap some pics if you're interested.

I'm planning on running mechanical so I don't have the sender under the hood. Also going with braided lines for it and the boost gauge.

I've gone through two of the 1 wire senders, possibly from vibration, but who knows. I'll need to check the pinout of the 3 wire sender, it might be possible to use it with a 1 wire gauge. It actually looks just like the GM sender on the 60degV6s, it may even be the same.
