Huge Project and need help

Okay I really should trade mark this but I wont so please don't steel my idea. And don't laugh if this idea is weird cause I like it anyways.

I am going to be trying to convert my sunfire into an hardtop convertable. Anyone in to help?

good luck, be sure reinforce EVERYTHING!!! i recommend either getting a vert and cutting the top off of a coupe or at least find a vert and observe it's bracing

Yeah I will be doing alot of research before I touch any tools trust me I don't want to mess this up. I am thinking I can take out the rear speakers and deck and put some lifts and wire them to a timer so they work with the lifts that will lower and fold the top into place.

I would definitely second what COGcavi suggested. Get a convertible Sunfire so you already have proper chassis bracing entact, then find a wrecked out J coupe to pull the roof off of. I think it's definitely possible. Especially since you already have a good idea of how much work you're getting into.

You are definately not the first person to think about it. Good luck, but I won't hold my breath waiting.

I think it could work out good, but you should look at some of the euro-beauties that have already done it.. Benz', Beamers, etc. I think you would have to take the hardtop roof, and section it. Probably make 2 cuts across it, weatherstrip the edges, then put the pieces on actuators and shocks. A solid roof wont fit into the trunk while its down. You'll HAVE to cut it.

basically, our cars have a unibody chasis, which means the roof is part of the chasis of the car, and is a pretty important structural piece. without the roof, the car will end up folding in upon itself. verts have a ton of bracing added to keep that from happening.

in order to do something like this, you'd have to brace the entire car like a vert first, which isn't an easy task. so far, i don't think anyone has successfully done this yet.
