Hello, Here is what I need to know. If I am going to do the mod's?
I am think of trying to get a T-3 or T-4 Garrent turbo,
booster valve that would alot 12-20 pounds of boost,
Intercooler,
blow off,
New Exhausts and manifold
2.2 Ltr Head's.
NEW LINEs to and for the rad and oil sending lines.
Engine is a M model and Boring and rebuild kit for the 2.0L motor for the sunbird.
High Pressure fuel pump with new gas tank!
Here are the Question I need to know. Will I beable to just drop this in and have all the Electronic Parts sync up or do I need to replace or change some other part's?
Electronics-wise you'll be fine, obviously you're going to have to fab some mounts and cooling lines for a bigger turbo and an intercooler but that's no big deal.. Is your rebuild kit for the 2.0 turbo engine? Make sure of that because you won't want NA parts in it, they won't last long lol.

I didnt know that the 2.2 and the 2.0 heads were interchangable.
thats because they're not. atleast as far as OHC engines go......that is unless you get all european

So you're saying that the Isuzu head doesn't fit the Pontiac block? Just checking, 'cause I haven't seen the two together to compare.

Ahh i thought he was talking about the pontiac 2.2 heads. I was like hmmm OHV head, OHC engine don't work well together

if you want a 2.2L than buy one bro.
if you want boost, buy a 2.0 ohc turbo.
or use a 2.0 ohc n/a and do turbo swaps (i.e. the turbo head, exhaust man. intake man. ecu, fuel pump, injectors, ect)

A woman I work with has a 1998 Isuzu Amigo with a 2.2 DOHC engine that is so similar to the 2.0 in my Sunbird it even says "GM" on the side of the block. Isuzu and Daewoo both use/used updated versions of the 2.0 in the Sunbird which is actually (as we all know) an Opel/Vauxhall engine.
How's that for trivial BS?

Thats news to me also, I've been thinking of all kinds of ways to get all the DOHC parts over here for my car I even know a guy who travels back and forth from britan and I was going to ask him for a favor, lol but if theres a head already in north america I'm going to have to be doing some research and get on this before I go to the wreckers April 30 were I got a deal were I can have anything I want for free
God I hope that head will fit on my block
Well I've been doing some searching and I found out there is also a diesel 2.2 DOHC motor that was made for a while (not sure on the year span) the gas 2.2 DOHC motor came in Isuzu Amigo and Rodeofrom 96 - 00, the RPO code is LA9 and the motor has 140 hp NA, not sure on tourqe. I found some pics of the head and a pic of a 2.0 ohc head gasket and they look pretty good, the bolt holes look the same but the antifreee passages are shaped a little diffrent, but there close enough with a die grinder and a bit of work I'm sure you can make it work.
I'm not 100% on the head bolting on cause I just saw the pics and they looked the same so they could be, I'm pretty sure they are. I've been planning a DOHC head swap for a while now and now that I finally found a head in north america that I can get my hands on I am so doing this swap and I'm going to turbo it as well. I have full acess to a machine shop too so if the anti freeze passage thing is a problem I can fix it while im porting the head

btw: does anyone have some pics of the top of a 2.0 ohc motor with out the head? I saw a post a while ago that I think was started by 89turbo and it had pics of his motor with the head off but I cant find that post. Anyone know the post? or 89turbo, do you still have those pics? I just need to see the top of the block to compare to the head to see how much room I have to do the machining if needed.

Sorry to tripple post here but I just saw some pics of the motor in the amigo and it is the exact same as the motor in the vauxhall cavaliers and calibras, so bassically the DOHC head that everyone thought was only avalible in the UK is actually avalible everywere and now I'm 100% sure the head will bolt on, but the pistons need to be changed to for valve clearance and all the pullies and crap on the belt end of the motor need to be changed to get the timing right.
Now I just hope the wreckers has the motor there
yeah the timings gonna be the tricky part but now I know what I'm gonna do with my extra engine i got from stenger

I've got a pic of the timming belt side of the motor, so I know what it's susposed to look like, lol I'll find a spot to host it for you to see later if you want. right now its just on my computer.
Are you going to turbo yours as well fudd?
also if your doing any research on this the engine code for the non turbo DOHC motor is C20XE and the turbo version is C20LET I've found some pretty good sites using those in a search engine.
sweet, yeah i have an extra turbo engine now, I bought Stenger's old bird for the tranny but it had a decent engine on it too. I'm taking a few parts of it to get my newly rebuilt (straight stock) 2.0T running but I'm keeping the block and other shtuff to build up one to abuse hee hee. Bigger boost and this DOHC swap is looking very interesting.

BTW do u know what the code for the Isuzu engine is? My Dad actually has a turbo diesel Isuzu enigine I think its a 2.2 I'm not sure though. Its SOHC so I'm not going to be getting anything from it. I just never thought about it being the same as my turbo sunbird

Don't worry about the prices in UK pounds, if you contact Matheus he'll be able to sort out a price in $$$$
As for the Daewoo and Isuzu DOHC heads, they'll physically bolt onto the OHC block with no modifications. The OHC blocks have provisions for the timing belt tensioner etc. already. But why use the stock OHC block? The Daewoos have a stronger block with more webbing
and a main cap girdle.
You'll have issues with the electronics and finding a way to do the ignition timing - contact a guy called PontiacJeff on the LT3 forum as he's done the DOHC conversion on the OHC block already.
The guy in the link above also does turbo kits for the daewoo type DOHC engine, these are listed as.......

I've never done much research as far as the Daewoo block, was it sold in any of the cars that made it to the US? I know they only imported them in mass a few years before they went kaput.

I wanted to see one of the Isuzu blocks, so I took a trip to the local Isuzu dealer. Driving through the parking lot, I spotted a used one sitting on shipping pallet outside. Parked the car, walked over, took a look, then replaced the plastic bag that had been blown off. Ended up in a tiff with the CFO of the "Dealership Network" because he'd "caught me sneaking around." WTF????? With car parked in plain sight, talked to people on the way in and out, even asked who to see about the engine out back. Hokay, no $ale there.
Anyway, Pontiacjeff made a nice adapter to run the Pontiac distributor ignition on the Daewoo (or was it Isuzu) engine. It looked good, and probably worked well. But that's a fair amount of work, and may not be necessary. If the DIS ignition from that engine uses signals similar to the GM ignition systems, then the stock 1227749 Sunbird turbo ecm can be used. I've determined (and posted) how to use this distributor ecm with a GM DIS ignition. I actually went so far as to start reading about the Isuzu ignition system, but never finished.
DOHC = more valve and port area = higher flow = less boost needed for same power level. So you don't have to get as crazy with alky injection, or aftercoolers large enough to have their own mailing address, or race fuel that's $4 to $10/ gallon. But you do need a larger turbo fairly quickly.
The Isuzu diesel engine is a different character. Years ago I wanted to install a 1.6L Isuzu diesel from a Chevette in an '82 J car to cut down the fuel costs. I'm glad I didn't because the vibration probably would have shaken the fillings out of my teeth.
Finally, the Isuzu 2.2 is coded X22SE and was available from 98 to '02 in the Amigo and Rodeo.

thanks, some good info there. Yeah my first car was an 84 Isuzu P'up w/ the 2.2 NA diesel that thing was so stinkin slow and it shook like crazy lol. Got like 40 mpg though and it always ran rich.

I planed on using my 2.0 turbo ecm with this head but I forgot the DOHC motor had DIS, slowolej do you mind posting again how to make that ECM run a dis set up or post the link to were you posted that.

Tyrin, you need to use a modified chip to use DIS. There are three changes that need to be made. The "max advance," "max retard," and "reference angle" need to be adjusted. Reference angle needs to be 60 degrees. Max advance and max retard need to be switched to negative values to work with the new reference angle. I don't have a copy of my calibration handy to check the exact values, but if you're in a real rush, I may have posted them on Darkmuck's LT3 page.
I also checked some info on the Isuzu DIS. It doesn't appear to be a straightforward adaptation of GM's ignition strategy. The pcm controls ignition timing at all times, even during cranking. All synchronization for the coils is done in the pcm. Someone might be able to use a FAST Edist or similar system for coil on plug ignition and GM-like signals.
