Disaster or Opportunity?

So my 2.2L has sounded more like a machine-gun out of ammo for a little over a week now. I had two different mechanics look at it (because I didn't beleive the first one) and it looks like I need a new timing chain. That was before I decided to go fishing. Before I even got to the lake, my poor car started going into convulsions and finally stalled out when I stopped at an intersection. (Yes I was that guy who messes up traffic on friday, just when you're trying to get to the cottage.)

Cut to the point... Timing chain and guide sprockets are toast, I've been told my whole engine may be junk, but haven't had anyone take a look at the top end yet. It's already costing me around $500 to have the chain and sprockets replaced and that may not even get things running again!

The bright side... If my engine is screwed, then I have a good excuse to drop in a 3.1L and really start having some fun. My question is whether it's better to fix my existing 2.2L or start looking for a new engine?

You drove the car with a bad timing chain that long. :O Good chance you've caused some damage. I would say go with a 3.1 but if you aren't able to swap it yourself it will get expensive..

My bank statements are hurting enough already, but if it won't run once the timing's fixed, then I'm definately looking for either a 3.1L or a whole new car. It'd be tough to part with my '94, but If I got a new ride just think of all the fun I could have with a fresh project!

Well the verdict is in... $600.00 later, my timing chain is fixed and I'm no longer in the market for an engine. Kinda disappointed that I no longer have a reason to start a project, but very happy that I don't have to put out any more cash! Apparently when the chain let loose, it jammed up bad enough that everything just stopped where it was and I avoided any further damage. (At least that's what I'll keep telling myself so long as it keeps running.)

well good luck and I hope it lasts a good while for you. the project can always be a future plan. I've never jumped with a chain before but have jumped time with belts plenty, twice in the sunbird alone.

You could have had a 3.1 in the car for $600 if you did it all yourself, for some reason it always seems to surprise me how much people spend at garages, another reason I do everything myself, no car thats ever sat in my driveway has ever been to a garage for work on anything. If you learn to do it your self you save so much money, and I just enjoy working on cars, I'd take any reason to fix something on it, lol so I keep moding to keep me busy.
Anyways, kinda wandered off there, lol I just think thats way to much for that kind of work.
btw arch: Just thought I'd give you a little update since you were looking forward to my t top conversion. I just bought a daytona with T's and I'm picking it up as soon as I get the guys adress So now I have all my parts and I just need to do the work.
I just got Yahoo messenger so I'll se you on some time

Sorry to go off topic again Josh, lol
Does anyone else think thats to much?

If I had the necessary tools and workspace, I'd do it myself for sure. I hate paying $60 or $70/hour labour fees, but this car is my daily driver and I needed it back on the road A.S.A.P. I don't have a problem doing most repairs on my vehicle, but this one I decided to hand over to the professionals.
