91 2.2 tbi problems

ok many of you know me as "starngecavie2.2" or "darknstrangecavie" but after my 94 was totalled I began looking for a new project and finally found it...a 1991 VL w/5spd. only problem is that it doesn't run right and I want to get it running perfect before I start modding it.

onto the problem. The car Bogs down as if it was only running on 3 cylinders,it has not stalled out yet but acts like it wants to. While driving in this bogged down state there is a strong gas smell. The CEL never comes on either.

I've tried changing the plugs,wires,fuel pump/filter,ECM.

anybody have any ideas on what it could be? I'd really like to get this thing running right so I can start putting all the extras on it.

First thing I would do is check for a vacuum leak at the fuel pressure regulator.

a bad/cloged cat would cause that as well. bang on the cat a little bit and then try it again if it runs ok after words you know its the cat. sounds crazy but thats how I found out that mine was bad once.

well I'm pretty sure it was the catalytic converter. After I hit it a few times it seemed to run fine for a little while. Thanks for all the help guys. now I just gotta wait till payday to get it fixed.

I just poped my cat off and knocked the leftover junk outta the shell when mine cloged. When I put the cat back I just used hedder collector gaskets to seal the cat flanges up (mine has 3 bolt flanges on it, yours may or may not).
