Today I stopped and looked at a 92 Sunbird SE coupe that was at a local used car lot. It has the 3.1 badges on the front fenders and an auto tranny. Its very clean looking, with no dents or rust that I could see and the interior looked very good. I'm not sure what options it has. It does have the wing on the trunk. Odometer says 117,000+ miles on it. The lot was closed so I didn't get to look under the hood or closely inside it. The asking price on the window is $2900 which seems very high to me.
I looked on edmunds, nada, and kelly blue book and a car in excellent condition is only going for between 1295-2200. What would be a good price to shoot for on this car?
$1500. no more.
for the record, i paid $500 for my 91 Z24.

yea 1500 is a stretch, only if the interior was immaculate would i pay so much.
800 - 1000 is fair.
$800 for my 2.0 5-speed with no rust and 96k on it.
i paid $1000 for a 91sunbird vert 2.0 auto no rust 99,000
I stopped again today to look at it closer and see if I could talk to someone about it. The car was unlocked and the keys were in it. I looked the car over better than I did yesterday. The clearcoat on the hood is starting to peel off but the rest of the car is good and no rust like I thought.
The interior was clean but the carpet was kind of dirty and the dash and driver's side door panel were starting to warp. It had a few options but no power windows or cruise. It did have a tach and all gauges.
Trunk was clean but it didn't have the full liner or cargo net.
Engine compartment was clean but you could see the valve cover gasket had been leaking and it still had the original plug wires on it. I looked under the car and it is leaking oil from several spots. The underside is pretty oily.
I started the car up and it sounded good. The engine was quiet and it had a nice exhaust tone. The exhaust pipes were clean with no soot.
A salesguy finally came over and we talked. He said it was traded in by an older woman who I believe he said was the original owner. I asked what was the lowest price he would take and he asked me what I would give. I told him that I had looked this car up on Edmunds, KBB, and NADA and that it was worth quite a bit less than what he was asking and told him what price range I had found. he said that he more than that amount in the car and that the least he would take was $2,600-2,700. He said he would get what they were asking because he said you don't find these cars for sale much and that it was a nice straight car.
After that he just said thanks for coming in and walked off. So, not much luck in talking him down on price. It is a clean car but if anyone does there homework, they will realize that it is way overpriced and I pretty much told the guy that. I'll be curious to see how long it sits out there.

glad to see you did your homework before buying. he would have ripped you off if you'd given him the chance.

so you explained to him that it had oil leaks and possibly a gasket problem and the plug wires had never been changed basically saying that it was poor-to-mediocrely maintained? pointing out the faults, while remaining calm, may have helped u talk him down. was he a manager? they can sometimes be more lenient and maybe more open to hearing your offer.
or maybe they're both jbo members.. lol..
