New Purchase Is Making Noises
Thursday, October 05, 2006 2:21 PM
Well, just as i was bringing my new first car home, it started making high pitch noises at idle, and the noise increased with rpm. I think the exhaust has a leak becuase the car is pretty loud, it may be related somehow.. The noise is coming from the right front and under the car. Anyone have any ideas what it is.

The car is a 94 Sunbird Le, 2.0 5 spd. 103 000 km on it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

you cant even fit a duffle bag in the back seat of a bird... its a "torture chamber"

nice try

Its a squealing noise. It sort of sounds like this scenario right here> imaging a the noise when something continuously hits something brass. picture some brass piece getting hit by a fan blade continuously. Thats the kind of noise its making. Theres not a fan hitting something brass under my car, but thats how i would describe it. Maybe something is hitting the harmonic balancer. I know at school when you hit it with something, it would make that noise. I duno?

It increases with rpm and is there at idle.

If only it was krugers idea, if only. I never 'blessed' the bird yet but im sure me and my gf will have plenty of room to get the holy juices running.

a bad bearing in your : water pump.....power steering......a/c....alternator.......? those are all RPM dependant.............check if any of your pulleys have a wobble to them....thats a goodsign of bearing failure..

p.s. I dont know bout yours.....but my girlfriend doesnt sound like screeching brass in the back seat.....cant say ide keep going if that was the case haha.

Kruger, shes sooo screechy, its hot. lol

Thanks kruger, now that you mention it, it probably is a bearing. Its coming from the drive belt area. Sometimes its worse than other times. Any bets on how much time i have to fix it, and how much one of these bearings would cost in parts? Im hoping its a waterpump, becuase that would be part of maintenance, and id throw on a new timing belt in the mix. new coolant, wouldnt be too bad. hopefully

Thanks man, hopefully its not too costly, not in any rush to fix it tho, its going to be in storage until my bday when insurance drops.

-Things to fix so far:
bearing, belt
new springs
tune up
rust/rot on the driver side door
maybe front shocks or struts or whatever
exhaust leak
and then, she'll be like new.

My timing belt travels across the pulley and rubs on the covers....check for that, too..

Thanks for the input guys. Im going to check it out when i get the chance.

I have to fix it tho before i put the car on the road. The noise is LOUD, annoying and pretty ghetto if you ask me. Its like the type of noise a loose heat shield would make, but amplified like a mother. Sucks like cucca.
