How much abuse can the 2.2 take?
Saturday, December 16, 2006 4:35 PM
I've got a 1993 cavalier with 200,000km on it. Its got the base modle engine (2.2) with a 5sp tranny.

What rpm is the rev limiter located at?

What rpm is redline?

What speed is the governor at? 160?

I've been bouncing off the rev limiter quite a bit recently and I'd like to know how much abuse these engines can take before I blow it up. She's a strong runner, running full synthetic for the past year or so.

108 MPH =173.8KPH

Was he asking for it in K's

Actually the fastest my 93 2.2 has gone is an indicated 160KPH(Truck's speedo), being towed by a breakdown truck after the cooling fan seized.

It has never seen anything like that speed since.

let me upload the videos where we put
a hose directly into the throttle body
drained the oil, tached it for about half hour, put rocks, twigs, sand, two eggs, italian dressing, chocolate syrup into the throttle body and she still ran like a champ.
the tranny was blown so we figured wed try and see what abuse the engine could take. let me upload them to photobucket and post them. lol its almost frightening to watch for the J-lovers

Man, that's confidence. Able to take one hand off the wheel to point out the speed at almost 200mph. Dayam.

Chocolate syrup is what powers Nextel Cup cars.

I had to take both hands off the wheel. I was holding the camera too The brake light is wired to the "you're about to hit 200mph" sensor.

steering this back on topic.

The biggest problem with the 2.2's are the headgaskets. They tend to develop a coolant leak at front of cylinder #4. Other than that I have held a stock one at 7000rpm for about 5 minutes to try and kill it, and it wouldnt blow up.

If your looking for something bullet proof, a simple investment of less than $1000 in those motors can make a big difference. Pistons, valve springs, camshaft go make it a much stouter motor.

Yeah sorry guys, talking about KPH. I've had the needle burried countless amounts of time, just nice to know what rpm she's sitting at without investing in a tach.

When I downshift I usually skip a gear or two. For ie: 5-4-2. I went strait from 5th into 2nd the other day and that sounded @!#$ neat. "BBBLLAAAAHHH" lol

With all the abuse she's been thru, the engine is holding up great. The syncro's in 3rd,4th and 5th have all gone to @!#$ within the short time I've owned the car.

^^^wow, that car should last a while.......

People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......

If it helps you any, I have the 2.2 in my '97 and after 200,000 miles it still runs like a champ. I drive it hard every day, shifting at 6200rpm, regular 2nd gear pulls to 60mph, just as regular 3rd gear pulls to 80mph, occasional 4th gear pulls to 108mph, it takes it all and smiles. But I also take care of her. Regular tune-ups, premium fuel, quality fluids, etc.

i blew mine up at 161k miles...

after very long phone conversations with James Cahill, mine was reborn with Eagle Rods, Clevite 77 Berrings, Mulling(spelling?) oil pump, comp cams roller rocker arms, P&P head, Line Bored block (berrings are .50 over) micropolished cam and crank shafts, and everything else brand new OEM (except the pistons... those were cleaned up by the machine shop)

the motor... first blew a head gasket... so i did the head work... then 15 miles later... it spun a rod berring on cyl 1. so the bottom end was done...

IIRC from what i was told... a stock 2.2 block will hold up to 4 lbs of boost...

if you seriously wanna blow it up... just turbo it without doing any sort of internals... and dial up the boost controller to like 15 lbs..

I've taken a leak into the throttle body of a running 2.5L.

yep.. I gurentee you they can handle more than 5psi,, now how much more I have no idea. I haven't really pushed mine alot nor my car isn't a daily driver either as a matter of fact I'll be lucky to put 3K on it a year. but keep in mind.. if its well tuned then t his is the case.. if not wel.... before I thought about boosting mine I've done the research and the blocks are rated just over 200hp.
