New convertible tops
Monday, March 19, 2007 1:44 PM
. I see many convertible tops for sunbirds on ebay. I just bought a '94 bird and needs a new top. Anyone have any tips on replacing one and which place do you guys reccomend buying from. Other than the top this car is cherry. The top on this car has a glass window and I think I would like to get another top with one.

if you can... do it yourself... its wicked @$$ expensive to get someone else to do it... 8 hours of labor @ $40/hr.... yeah... you get the point...

I would not recommend doing that. Just get the new one and do it yourself.

I did some more searching and found a few places that sell them. I am going to buy a new top I just need to decide on either the cheaper vinyl one or the more expensive fabric/canvas one. Seems all of them require 6-8hr install time.

EZ-ON auto tops makes the best ones for our cars, just get vinyl, make sure you specify it has a rear glass window. Get a new rear curtain (glass and surrounding cables), a new top, new stay pads, and new cables, and a new well too if yours is shot, then get the GM Service manual for your car, the instructions on changing the top are in there. Should be under $400 in parts tops. Check my registry here for a link to where I order mine, great people.

Well I got the old top off and found the tack strip on the rear is pretty bad. I will be replacing the tack strip and starting to install the new top tomorrow. I need to purchace some contact cement and something for adhesive to glue the top and curtain together at rear deck. Anyone with experiece with this PLEASE chime in and give any tips for reassembly.

Thanks, SHAD

Top is just about on. Not too bad of project, just need to measure twice and take your time. All I have left is put the front weather strip on and the rear trim pieces. I just winged this one..................................

I just used the ACE hardware brand nothing special. Get a few brushes to apply it. All I got to say is read the directions before this project a couple of times and TAKE YOUR TIME and TAKE PICTURES of dissasembly.

I used 3M convertible top adhesive... from Advance auto I'm sure any parts store has it. It's a spray adhesive and it's really messy, I suggest masking with tape prior to use. Also now is a good time to repaint the frame. I used rustoleum flat black spray paint and it worked awesome, great match for the black top and stay pads.

gmpartsdirect.com

go to the dealership and ask them to pull up the diagrams, get the part numbers and say thanks good bye. Just don't forget to get the printout before you go.
