cutting springs

ok i know im gonna get flamed for this but im gonna ask anyway.
the idiot that had the car before me heated the springs to lower it
and that worked for the year that ive had the car
but two nights ago they finnaly took a @!#$! the ball bearings fell out of
the strut when i jacked the car the next morning up to see what was wrong.
so i had to go to a yard and i got new struts from a 2000 cav (mine is a 98).
i know its a ghetto bs way to do it and im saving up for a coil over kit so it would
only be temporary but if i cut like two or three coils off would that hold
up untill i can afford the c.o. kit?i dont know alot about suspension but im thinking
that if cut them so that the seat exactly where the should and all that it shouldn't
hurt to much. but i dont know though ,thats why im asking you guys.

JUST SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO IT THE RIGHT WAY THE FIRST TIME. Its your cars suspension do you really want to go "ghetto/cheap." I dont think so.

/\ /\ /\ Is right. Don't mean to sound like a dick but your car broke cause it was half assed. If done correctly the aftermarket parts should last as long as the stock stuff if not longer.

Besides its safer to do it the correct way too.

As far as I know all third gen stuff is interchangable. And thanks for not taking what I said the wrong way.

The strut mount is different.

The bearing and the strut are two different parts. The strut is identical. The mount is different. The top nut is also different. All that info is in the FAQ.

Cutting/Heating springs in any way is a BAD idea, and has been covered before.

If you got the whole strut+mount assembly (called a knee assembly) you can bolt it right in (3 nuts/bolt on top, 2 bolts on the bottom).

Enjoy the ride on the stock springs until you can save enough for a GOOD coilover set. Don't get them from ebay!

No doubt, had you searched you would have found removing the springs completely to be a much easier solution, with giving you the most drop possible.

You forgot to tell him that this also eliminates the need to spend money on a good set of struts, because you can just use a solid bar from the spindle to the strut mount.

Might as well remove the mount while you at it. Those break too.

People have really gotten hurt even killed because of this sort of thing, so I'll tell you the same thing I told someone else the other day :

I'm not saying the same will happen to you, but history repeats itself, which is why we have evolution. Evolve. Learn from others' mistakes. Prevent history from becoming destiny. Don't skimp on the parts. You want to gut out your cat, use PVC pipe for an intake, spray paint the rust to hide it, leave air bubbles in the window tint, fine. But when it comes to important things, like suspension, don't skimp..

PVC pipe when gets hot, can produce toxic fumes. Don't do that either. Totally agree about the suspension. It's not something you want to cheap out on. If you can't afford a good setup, don't do it.

Wow. Toxic fumes? I had no idea. I officially retract that portion of my previous statement.

Wow. You're really missing the point. I'm not saying it's a good idea to use PVC, I'm just saying that of all the bad ideas you or anyone else could come up with in terms of cheap mods for a car, skimping on the suspension and brakes is right on top. Will PVC pipe work for an intake? Yeah. So will dryer hose and a sponge stuck in the end. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.
