Strut bearing plate ?

Are the strut bearing plates from a 95+ jbody compatible with an 03 cavalier?

I read the FAQ, which says that 95 - 04 suspension components are compatible.

When I look up the bearing plates from a 95 cavalier and my 03 cavalier, the part numbers are different. Are they actually compatible, or will i be stuck paying $105 from Napa for the 03 bearing plate?

Also, does anyone know of a place that has bearing plates for the 03 at a better price?

yeah theyre compatable

reason its a different number is that the mount changed design in 2000 but many people say the 1999 and below mount is a superior design.

but all mounts are interchangeable between 3rd gen J bodies

The 00 - 05 style is one piece, with a friction bearing. It's not rebuildable if any part of it breaks you have to replace the whole thing. And J Strut mounts are known to go.

The 95 - 99 style (which also fits a few other cars) is 3 separate pieces. The spring seat, bearing, bearing plate. If one part breaks, replace just it. That's why we think it's superior, that and the bearing has ball bearings.

If you have 00+ you can switch to the 99-, but you have to get all three parts.

sweet deal, it will be cheaper in the long run too, being able to replace separate pieces.

thanks for the info guys, you just made my month.

part numbers for the items would be helpful too, as most part searches come up nil

thanks in advance

i paid 120 for my front strut mounts (set)and 60 for my rear (set)
if you're going to go through the trouble of piecing things, why not get two new ones? when did you replace them last?

The front bearing plates and bearings you can get at any auto parts place. The spring seat you'll have to get from a deal or a yard. I suggest the yard, cause they don't go bad (unless they're broken in half). GM Part# 22130318.

I'm gonna get new parts, but i wanna get the 95-99 style because so far all i've heard is that they're far superior with their ball bearings, compared to the plastic bearing of the 00+ model

The ball bearing will not outlast the friction bearing or anything like that. But it's <$20 to replace when it goes bad. So yeah, for people who fix thing themselves, it's way cheaper.

actually, this is the first time replacing the struts and strut bearings, car hast 55000 miles on it now.

Is that the part # for the spring seat, or the bearing plate & bearing?

I'm curious as to why you want to replace the strut mounts and their bearings. If there's nothing wrong with them- no noise or other problems, then why replace them? You should be able to replace your struts and just reuse the original mounts with their bearings.

Why would you not do both at the same time... Even if it is not making noise now it will eventually and why not do them now and pay for the install time and alignment only once???

the driver front bearing plate is knocking during braking, and over "floating" bumps, so yes, it needs to be installed.

I'm also doing all the work myself, seeing as how i've got access to a full shop with all the necessary equipment. The only reason i'm not doing both is because finances are a little tight right now, and since both struts and only the one bearing are dying, thats all i can scratch the funds up for at the moment.
