my question is pretty much my subject above, when i back up and apply my brakes I sometimes hear a clunking sound like, my buddy suggested maybe my calipers are bad? any ideas, I think sometimes when I'm going forward also, but mostly in reverse!
1. Buy a can of brake cleaner
2. Use it liberally
spray it on the brake caliper itself?

Cavvy's have rotors in the back stock? Or is this a conversion?
Anyways, when he says use it liberally, spray EVERYTHING. The rotor, pads, caliper, clean it all good. Brake clean is a wonderful thing.
But, my guess would be, that if it is rotors in the back, check the slides for the caliper, the pad fitment, stuff like that, if it's drums in the back, check your wheel cylinders and pad fitment.

drums in the rear, but I'll get me a can of that stuff, thanks a lot!
Cavaliers do NOT come with disc brakes on the rear, so take off the rear drums and hose em down nice and clean.

also, does the clunk come from the front or rear of the vehicle?

If the clunk is coming from the front, its most likely something other than the brakes. It happens only when you apply the brakes in reverse?
I dont think i've ever heard a bad caliper going clunk in a car, a bad caliper usually siezes and doesnt operate at all, a clunk signifies a rapid change of position. Calipers usually have a smooth range of operation. If the caliper goes bad, it usually gets stuck in the open (free wheel) or closed (brakes on) positions. Neither is generally a good thing. I'd suggest you either check out the front end's suspension, or have a (reputable) shop take a look at it. DONT GO TO PEPBOYS lol
Possibility list:
Control arm bushings
Strut mount
Loose strut to steering knuckle bolts
Sway bar mounts or end links

CA bushings don't usually clunk unless the bolt is loose.
Also add shot ball joints to the list of suspects.
yeah, CA bushings I'm sure need it, and yeah probably ball joints, it should get fixed monday or wednesday. I'll let you all know what the culprit is when I find out. thanks for the help.

I've Seen CA bushings fall out so bad that when you do hit the brake the control arm shifts and hits the subframe.......so it is possible
