control arm keeps coming loose, broken weld...
Monday, July 23, 2007 7:18 PM
last year i thought my bushings had worn on on my control arm so this year when i finally started driving the car i changed them only to find that the weld that holds the nut in place had broken off from the sub frame. so now ive noticed that when i tighten it down i get about half a mile from home and the things starting to come loose again. i dont think i can weld this thing back on without cutting a piece of subframe off first and then having to reweld that, so how can i fix this problem?

someone had suggested that i use a nylon locking nut o nthere with some lock tight and if i can stick the original nut onto the end of that to jam it into place. id like to fix it right the first time or atleast in a way thatll last. im sure this isnt too uncommon so lets hear what you guys have done to fix this problem

drop the sub frame and weld the nut , make sure and put anti-sieze on the bolt and run it through the nut

and just do small spots and let it cool inbetween spots

really dont wanna drop the subframe at this time. its looking like the only chance i have of it working. might just try the nylon lock nut with some lock tight and see if that works, if not ill have to do some welding. thanks guys. this will be done this week, if anyone has any other ideas let me know

run a longer bolt threw and double nut it.

that should be fine........tighten it all the way then tighten another nut on there.

thats another thing i was thinking of doing. longer bolt onto a nylon lock nut and then another nut onto that one with some lock tight for both and hope it stays on.

thanks man, hopefully that holds, if not then i get to cut and weld, yay

came loose again, used red lock tight, a locking nut and another nut on the end to jam it into place. so right now im looking at tihs for an option, tightening it back up and putting a couple spot welds onto the bolt itself where it meets the subframe. i had a quick look into the opening and it doesnt seem that droppingthe subframe would help me much as theres no opening on the top of the subframe. right now ive got brand new urthane bushings there and chances are by the time those are worn out the cars gonna be ready to get replaced.

so, anyone see a problem with me putting a few welds onto the bolt side?

thinking about it some more, i think im gonna reverse the location of the nut and bolt. put the bolt in from the back and crank it down with my gun and then spot weld the nut in place. any objections to that?
