Powerslot bedding
Wednesday, April 09, 2008 2:14 PM
So I got my Hawk pads and powerslot rotors and am stoked to get them on. I read the paper that came with the powerslots and it said I should work them in for 200 to 500 miles before any intense braking. That seems like a lot to me and is kinda a pain because school down here almost everything I drive to is really close as in I should bike there more than drive.

So what all did you powerlsot guys do to bed them and did you go 200 or more miles?

hmm I'm also interested... I just received the powerslot/ hawk pads setup... i'm going to follow the exact instructions as to how to bed them..... I think the 200-500 miles is just saying not to take them to the track or submit them to harsh braking in that time period... It should not harm them if you are doing normal braking in that period...

I kinda got that but I was wondering if it is really bad for it. Probably so I will most likely go through with it as the paper says jsut trying get some info.

I imagine if you decided to do harsh braking before they are properly bedded.. you'll run the risk of warping your rotors...

this is a good read...

Just let them go through a few heat cycles and you will be fine. Brake from 60-80 k to a full stop about 5 or 6 times in a row to heat them up then let them cool for a couple hours, repeat and forget about this 200-500 miles bull@$#&!!!!

it tells you on that sheet how to do it, you go 3 stops i think from 45 to 10, with 10 minutes in between to cool, then 55 to 5 mildly agressive 3 times with 10 minutes in between. it says right on there how to do it. i would do it right or sell the brakes.

I have to agree.. if your not going to do it to manufacturers specs you're just asking for trouble... I predict you'll have a post in 6 months saying.... should my powerslot rotors look like this???

I know that and I agree do it right. What I was asking is the 200 to 500 mile question but i guess i should just go for a nice little drive.

When i threw Hawk pads and ebay special drilled and slotted rotors on my GP, I did the stops like it said. I dont remember reading anything about a 10 minute cool down between stops. They worked very well anyways.

you are supposed to let them cool in between stops because it is part of the tempering. i know when i did mine, i did them at like 5 am. then went out on the road because traffic was dead and i drove the whole day until i had to get gas without coming to a 100% stop so the pad didnt burn into the rotor. i drove that way for about a week, only stopping to park the car completely. to temper brakes, you heat them up, then cool them, heat them up, cool them, thats how tempering works.

So you went for a 10 minute drive inbetween stop? That was the part that i wasnt sure about in your post.

yes, you do the series of stops, 45-10, drive 10 minutes, thats why i picked my route ahead of time, and did it at the time i did so there was no traffic, then you do that through the cycles. it took me about 2 hours to get them all said and done broke in for their period. they lasted a long time and i still have them on the car with TONS of life left.

Cool beans, i'll try to remember that for when i do brakes on mine.

It says it on the inside tab of the Hawk box too...

6-8 stops from 35mph (not a hard stop but don't drag the brakes)
4-5 stops hard from 45-50mph but don't slam the brakes

Let them cool down.

Mine have been fine since then...

I'm trying to figure out where I can do this.... there's a stretch of highway thats not to far away... but it would require driving through the city... does it harm the brakes to normally brake on them first??

your better off tempering them. just stop really really lightly. id recommend a DEAD road at early hours where nobody will be there. im sure there are roads like that everywhere. definitely temper them.
