bent rear axle, fe1 or fe2?
Thursday, January 21, 2010 12:16 PM
Downhill, going 20mph, tried to avoid car pulling out of driveway, slid and raped the sidewalk. Or... sidewalk raped me.
Just unsure of which rear beam axle to get from a junkyard so help me out.
Car is an 05, base model, no ABS. Believe its an fe2 that I need?! They have an fe1 and fe2 option... does it really matter?
Is this interchangeable between the 95-05 jbodys? If so can I go ahead and use an fe2 from a 95 or an 01?

Also, anything else I should check for damage?

IIRC FE2 is the code for the upgraded suspension. Either should work though.

Yes 95-05 will work. But the fe1 has no "sway bar" inside the triangle part that you bent of the axle the fe2 does have the "sway bar"

Thanks guys...
I just looked at my spare tire cover sticker on the back and one of the codes is FE1. Am pretty sure there is no sway bar under there but I should be all set with either one.

Any other parts I should check out under there for damage?

The "sway bar" is a welded piece of coat hanger inside the triangle. You should be fine either way.

i responded to your PM, which directed me here

the way the wheel is angled makes me wanna say the same thing. when you swap the axle out, if the strut doesn't line up correctly with the bolt holes, its very possible the strut is bent. definately go for an alignment after you do this. you won't be able to adjust anything in the rear unless you bring shims, but it is still a good idea just to get a base for whether anything else is @!#$. or if the axle you get is even straight.
its hard to tell from the pic, did you take a chunk outta the wheel at all?

There's no strut in the rear... WTF are you guys talking about?

for the record its not a sway bar its a re-enforcement bar theres a difference swap bars have bushings or movable links at the end not welded in solid

either FE1 or 2 will work you wont notice any difference in handling between the 2

guy at the yard has an 04 fe1 and says the 01 fe1 has different hubs and drums???
i still ordered the 01 cuz its $100 and am pretty sure i trust most people here then them out there.

wayne: not yet, just ordered the axle today, should get it get tomorrow.

the rim has minimal scratch marks. the front one is scraped A LOT half way around as the car swung the other way from the impact.

OHV notec: am with you lol. maybe you guys meant the rear shock? either way, i checked and it seemed fine. won't know until it has a new beam axle i guess.

IIRC the 03+ have slightly larger drums than the 95-02

It's a bar that technically reduces the amount of body roll by adding torsional strength to the twist beam... therefore "sway bar" is appropriate

Unless it hit the body, there's no way it bent. It's not constrained in the same way as a strut.

Sounds right to me. Should have listened to the guy at the yard. Technically, the axles themselves are the same, so the JBO was also right

Fact. A.K.A. stabilizer bar too.
You'll notice the difference with the bar on the back if you hustle the car in a corner, not when you're turning the car at 10mph as you approach the grocery store.

"Sway bar", "roll bar", and "stabilizer bar" are all used interchangeably. Just in case some Brit comes in here pushing "roll bar" lol

Hubs are the same, Drums are different, BUT, you can still use them, and get a little extra braking power out of them too.

the only thing different on the hub is 03+ had the option of NO ABS

got it done today, bought an 04 fe1 no abs axle for $150. No problems so far.
Swap was a bitch though, drums were stuck in the center right around the hub. Other than that, broke one of the brake bleeder caps.. all in all 3 hours.
Car is going straight so far, is an alignment A MUST??!

might not be a must, but just about anytime you mess with a serious suspension component an alignment should be in order.

glad you got her fixed man.... should have got the fe2 but ah well at least she drives again now... good work for only 3 hours worth of work.... i'd say the parking brake was the hardest part....

I had the same thing happen to me when I just purchased the car in my sig. I put a 95 sunturd gt rear beam in my 01, I just swapped hubs and drums...and all was good.
