Hey guys.
I'm shopping for some new shocks/struts for my new Sunfire. I still have my sportline srpings off old winter beater so i will be using them. Ive been told several different things, like KYB GR2's are good for 2 months, some say their good for 2-3 years. I had Gr2's on the beater with the sportlines for 6 months and the ride is still very tight and super stiff. But i want something better. So ive been reading some stuff here and some people go with Koni Reds, or Koni Yellows. Some Go with Tokico D-Spec. Has anyone tried the Tokico HP Blue shocks? and has anyone ever bought them off ebay? local stores in my area want 175 a strut, and for a set of 4 online at ebay.ca there $330 CND from different sellers. So its 700 for struts and 200 for strut mounts + taxes, or 1300 for coilovers + tax. Anyone have any places around Ottawa Canada were i can sorce some struts? I really dont want ot buy online. Id like to support some local buisness's.
I just lowered my cav on hp's with goldlines, its a stiff ride, but nothing to terrible.
Dont believe the hype around here, the hp's are the same thing as d-specs but without the adjustable knob.
And i got my hp's from eBay,so i wouldn't hesitate to buy from eBay.
why is stuff on ebay so cheap? because they lack the warranty available most likely.
buy from reputable sellers, car customs, turbo tech racing, a plus performance, never enough auto.

Well. i might throw my GR2's and sportlines back on for a bit. There all together with new monroe strut mounts. maybe ill get a couple of months out of them, by that time all be able to to afford the $800 cost of d-specs or hp's. I was told somewere that a hp blue is a better then OEM replacement strut, but them some people say there a racing strut, then some say there worse then kyb's. my only concern is how long with like last with the sportline drop. i really cant go any lower then the sportline drop due to my wheel size (18" x 8.5") I'm already having some rubbing issues on the inner wheel wells when the wheels are turned to there max turning ability. Anyone with any issues with the hp's?
- Thanks blue02zee24. Ill have to keep that in mind when i purchase a set. ill end up contacting you for the sellers name.
- z yaaaa - Most shops around my area have employee's who could care less about the customer so if i did have any warranty issues id have to take care of it myself. but supporting a small business would be my first choice rather then buying online. Thanks for the advice.
Why not get coil overs? Tein baisc's or SS or the other ones?
go into Canadian Tire, order the KYB AGX struts. total cost on them is 584 I think it was. I just ordered fronts for me at 340 I think it was and the rears are only 230-240 CAD.
JBO Stickers are back!!!! Click Me!!
Z yaaa, i talked to David Chou of tokico before buying any struts.
I got a killer deal on gold lines from eBay,and after reading on here about the hp's not handling a 2in drop,i decided to email tokico and find out through them.
First question.
Hi I'm thinking about buying some tokico hp struts for my 02 Chevy cavalier.I just like to ask if your struts the hp's can handle a 2" drop? I'll be using goldline lowering springs, which drop the car about 1.75" so i would like to know if the struts can handle this. Thanks, Greg.
First answer.
Hello Greg,
Thank you for contacting Tokico Performance Shocks. Is your car mainly a daily driver? The HP Blues is an excellent set of entry level performance shocks. This is a time tested product that has been around a looong time, and has proven it's reliability and performance. It will definitely handle 1.75 inch drop, and will also provide your car with less body roll and stiffer ride for better cornering. We also back our products with a lifetime warranty. I've had a guy return shocks under warranty after 16 years of use! If you are going to change out your springs, upgrading your shocks at the same time will save you money in the long run.
Good luck!
David
2nd question/reply
David,
Thanks for responding so quickly.Yes my car is just my daily driver,so I'm just lowering for looks and slight performance gains.
But while i have you here, could you tell me the difference between the hp's and the d specs?
I know the d specs are adjustable, but other than that,is there any other difference between the two? Thanks again
Greg.
2nd response
Hello Greg,
Sorry for the late reply, I was out of the office last week. You are correct about the main difference between the two, but that is a major difference (for some people). Again, for your needs, the HP Blues are perfect. The D-spec would be nice if you had the extra money... Either way, you'll be happy with the performance upgrade.
Enjoy the new ride!
David
So after this i decided with the hp's,didn't feel like spending that much money on the d-specs.
So I'll post this info for the rest of the forum.
Greg.
well then. i stand owned.
sorry for believing in the myth.
Well now. I think Ive made up my mind on what shock I'm going to purchase. Thanks alot for the feedback Blue02zee24. I really, really appreciate it.
Not trying to own z yaaaa, just making sure ppl have another option out there for shocks.
Norse your welcome.
so, dpsecs run around $600.... how much are the hp's?
You will like the HP Struts I have been running them for 2 years now, with no issues,And also have log about 80 thousand KM on them..
Also make sure to Install new upper strut mounts when you do it,and get a wheel alignment done..
Iirc you can get hp's on ebay for $312.

In my area there $150.51 a strut. so around 600 all together + taxes.
