do you guys think that the 95-02 sunfire cavalier 2.4s would run the cobaltss or redline in the 1/4. i have read that the cobalt and redline are only running mid 15's in the 1/4 and lots of 95-02 are running the same times. whats your opinion on that
i donno, but a turbo cav or fire, costs less, and will go faster for sure. Thats the only reason i don't trade in the fire for an ss...

No!! A modded 2.4 like I have that run 14.8's yes. Stock 2.4 against a stock SS, or Redline no. Car and Driver tested the SS at 14.7@ 95-97mph. They also mentioned that the wheels on the car were slowing it down.

Yep - Motortrend pulled a 14.5 @ 98.2 1/4 mile time in the Cobalt SS S/C. They also pulled a 0-60 time of 6.0 secs.
As for the Cobalt/Redline being heavier than the Cav/Fire, they are, but not by much. Stock J-bodies are about 2650-2700lbs, while a SS S/C/Redline is a little over 2900lbs. Not enough to really make a significant difference.
The reason for the weight difference is that the Delta (Cobalt/Redline) is a much more rigid and better built car than the J-body. Cars built in the 80's were generally pretty light, since they were so damn cheap and everything tended to fall apart. The J-body was of course originally built in the 80's, so the chassis is not all that solid or sophisticated.
Theres no way a stock Cav/Fire would even be close to a Cobalt SS or Redline in terms of performance. Stock 2.4 J-bodies will run low 16's (auto) to high 15's (stick) in the quarter, and 0-60 in the high 7's to 8's. Handling and braking are not even worth comparing, Cobalt stopped from 60-0 in 114ft, and pulled the best handling numbers of any FWD car ever tested.

i just ordered a AEM cold air, rk 4:2:1 header, nology ignition with new harness, AEM underdrive pully, Borla full cat back exhaust,and in a month i am doing a street/strip port and polish. my friend wants to get an ss, and another friend is getting a redline in a month. with all these modds do you think i have a chance. They are tired of getting beat by me, but i wanna keep winning.

If you are stock with 5-speed yes you will hang but the SS will win by a fraction. Slap on boost and you will beat it.
In real world test a Redline which its the sister of the SS will run 14.9-15.4 (Moroso). Cavaliers/Sunfire here have been running 15.2-15.7 stock 5-speed.
I have driven the SS in a Press introduction for the Miami AutoShow Nov-2004, I can attest you that its the same as the Redline. Same as to say Cavalier/Sunfire.
Problem here is the engine is decent but its straped to an anvil. A J will weigh in 2617-2700lbs. While Redline and SS is at 2950-3000lbs+.

You must be kidding - since when is 1 to 1.5 seconds difference in the quarter mile "a fraction"? More like a bus length, and the 0-60 time is not even comparable, its a whole 2 second difference. I'll be the first to admit that Ecotec 5-speed J-bodies are "quick", but they sure aren't that quick.

Where the hell do you come up with this stuff? A curb weight of 2991 is not a freakin "Anvil". Its only a couple hundred pounds heavier than the J-body, and thats expected considering it has a more rigid chassis, better build quality, better crash protection, and a lot more features, plus its supercharged and has 18in wheels
. As I've said before, its about the same weight as the other cars in its class, which includes the SRT-4 and Scion tC. They are both 2900lbs+, so I don't see what the hell your complaining about.

If you don't know but...14.9-15.4 vs 15.2-15.7 is a fraction of a difference. And those are numbers done in real life not read on by magazines. If you know how much of a distance is in length you are looking at/or less than comparable car length. Approx 1/2-3/4 car.

First I said 3000+lbs. Thats 9lbs or more of what GM is predicting. I have reason to say as they are 2 weights on three different cars on the site. Somebody with a brain will be very questionable on this. And if you don't know but 300lbs pounds no matter what, hurts in performance. Yes, it is heavy because the SRT-4 is a 4-door car and still weighs in less, and the Scion tC is a hatchback albeit a little on the heavy side and if you know how cars work, hatchbacks and with a glass roof tends to be considerably weigh in more then sedans wit steel roofs.

The redline's are faster than that. There is one fellow who has filter on the end of the stock tube and header from scdyne. He is turning repeated high 13's. There has been numerous guyz who have dynoed completely stock Redlines between 205 whp and 211 whp. PSI-FI motorsports has a twin-charge kit they are doing R&D on and will be producing.
what i want to know is if there is a way we can take the elec p/s pump and use it on our j's since it owould free up the cams weight pull and also allow ho cam modifactions more easily do to lack of worry about the intake cam (yes i relize that an ho cam swap would require new cam towers) but i have not yet seen the ss or any cobalt for that matter and wonder if we can take parts off it to mod our cars. i mean iunno about it's hubs but what about the 4 wheel disc brakes can we use them as a cheaper alternative to baer or even the self made kits useing brackets. instead of seeing how this car may beat us how can this car help us if at all but i for one would atleast like to see if it can so anyone who has tested or has detailed specs let me know if we can or can't use anything off this car in order to help
the view is all the same unless your the lead dog.
as has been discussed quite a few times in the brake/suspension forum, the bolt pattern of the wheels on the Cobalt and Redline are different and will not be a direct conversion for 4-wheel disc brakes on the cavaliers.
The power steering pump hex drive is the easy part to have modified for HO or LO cams to work with the 2.4L. The time consuming and expensive part is having the pickup for the cam position sensor put onto the cam. I have been told this takes 5-6 hours if you know what you are doing. Plus, it is a waste to put HO cams into a 2.4L unless you run standalone or convert to OBD1 as all the useful power will occur beyond the stock redline. HO cams were developed/designed to create gobs of power between 6000 and 7200 rpm.

Who said I feel it's faster? It is just about as fast as the Cobalt SS. Slalom tests were in the 67.8 to 70.2mph range depending on which rag tested it. Last I read (MT, Feb 2005), the Cobalt SS did 69 mph.
And believe me, I'm not hating on the Cobalt SS. I like it and think it's a great car. I also like the MazdaSpeed Protege. Remember though, the SS has 35hp on the MSP too and will outrun it in a straight line. On a track, it could very well be a driver's race. Depends on who wants to push their car harder.
