ABS on an 04 Base model?
Tuesday, July 25, 2006 6:32 AM
I have a 2004 cavy (base) model and im trying to figure out if i is possible just to enable the ABS by adding the ABS fuse into the fuse box in the engine compartment? does the base model have ABS on it but just disabled?

Yeah, just put in the fuse. While you're at it, put in the fuse for cruise control and you'll have that also.

Sorry, I hate it when people are wise asses, but I couldn't resist. If you are going to call yourself "Tecknogod", you may need to be a little more informed. The obvious answer to your question is "no".

Yeah, the fuse, relay, all four wheel speed sensors, wiring, different master cylinder, ABS pump, ABS solenoids, ABS computer, ABS light in dash and assocaited wiring.

You'll need the reluctor wheels for the front axles too... they didn't put those on the non-ABS cars..

J-cars don't even come with the wiring for options they don't have... unlike Dodge which just pre-wires the car for everything... there's a bunch of different harnesses for J-cars, dependent on the various power options... etc... even the Cavalier and Sunfire wiring is different...

Alrighty, thanks for the information. As for Lees04Cav, there was no reason to be rude, it was a simple question (Is the wiring and everything needed for ABS already on the Base model cavy?) I dont work for GM and I have only had this thing for a little over a month now. So give me some credit. Im still trying to learn my car.

Sorry. I didn't mean to be rude. I meant to be a wise-ass.

I think he told you. Adding cruise is easy to do, separate harness that you wire into the associated pick-up point, not hard to do, but ABS is a pain.....You aren't going to get it if you don't have it, its just that easy.

I thought ABS was standard on our cars? Maybe its an option in Canada?

It was standard on J-cars from 92 through 2002. It became an option again in 2003, because GM is F'N CHEAP!!

Here's a wild one for ya... a/c (and tilt steering) is apparently standard in the US on 03-05 models (at least.. maybe earlier too). But in Canada... it's an expensive option. You can't get tilt steering without a/c either.

Tilt steering and ABS were not standard on the 03-05 base model but they were standard on the LS and LS Sport models.

huhh i learned something today, good thing i didnt buy a base model cavalier (something cheap to tune) instead of my LS sport!

but wtf honestly, thats really stupid that GM would make ABS an option... isnt that something thats standard on almost all modern cars. and a option on Canadian cars to top that.... we get more snow and stuff.

my dads 05 sunfire sedan is the same way. it has tilt, power everything, keyless entry but no ABS. but his in an EX rental car so that could be part of it. still optional ABS is its GM trying to make the cheapest economy car possible.

Ah , The curse that is ABS. I've never trusted it. And from the many non-ABS cars at the local dealership I'm not the only one.

So it's unlikely but, possible , that GM listened for once.

The reason that GM eliminated the ABS on the base model was in response to the foreign competition. The Civic DX (base model) had nothing, and I mean nothing, no radio, no ABS, no AC, no tilt, no power anything. GM wanted to have a base model car and build options up from there.

Or you buy the base and add the things you want because you normally didn't get tilt unless you got the power windows and door locks (if I remember correctly). Cruise didn't come with tilt as a standard, you had to add it separate.

Abs you had to get away from the 1SB option package and then you got ABS as a standard. Most dealerships didn't get the non-ABS cars by choice, it was more "encouraged" upon them, and so they sold them cheap.
