i've done some research on the ecotec and found really good info on all the pro's of the motor but i really cant find too many cons. can anyone tell me some of the downfalls of the ecotec?

well, from what ive heard, and much of it comes from JBO posts:

early models (02-mid 03) had some timing chain issues, supposedly fixed with oiling system updates in the newer models. i heard 1 person (and only 1) mention something about premature cylinder wear. ive heard that they dont do so good on nitrous.

heres what i know for fact:
my 04 has 88,00+ miles on it, without a single problem. ive seen 2 of them break timing chains (though 1 wasnt well cared for, and not in a J...the other was sprayin nitrous at the time), ive seen a couple take a good amount of boost and hp without any issues. ive seen 1 take a 75 shot of nitrous, get driven very hard (and sprayed alot), and survive just fine.

overall it is a good engine, and probably the most robust and reliable 4 cylinder ever put into a J body. all things being equal...i think id take a 2.4 TC over the eco. aside from the oil pressure/main bearing issue they are a good engine (though the internals arent quite as strong as the Eco), and mod for mod they seem to make more power than the ecos.

however...there are many people who know these engines better than I, and hopefully they can help you out a bit more...

I went 12.53 on a completely stock motor and trans setup with drag radials strapped to the car.

Enough said.

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

You act like that's even impressive. Congratulations. Your sticker covered shop car only goes 12.50 on a drag radial.

Blew it up, build numbers coming soon

alright one other bad thing i heard was in 03 GM put an ECU that only runs on close loop. when i get the money and slap the turbo on my car (03 cavy) how in the hell would i tune on nothing but close loop?

That is now. Ryne made a 12.5 pass when his motor WAS stock.

I my opinion you'd have to search hard to find a better gm four cylinder. If i am not mistaken the opel vectra speedster was using the ecotec engine for years before it came to north america so it was tried an tested and true before being used here. I cant think of any flaws except the 4 bolts per crankshaft bearing cap that make the engine several ounces heavier, lol jk
