Had the car for over 2 years and has done this from day one of ownership, 90,000 to 130,000. In traffic it runs very hot, stop and go it is over or at the high safe level. In winter it barely gets into the operating temp range. During average 60 to 80 degrees days it runs with the gauge straight up the middle. Replaced the thermostat and now the running cool facter is happening more but sitting in traffic it will still go very high, overflowed the other day. Since the coolant change/therm change it takes a lot longer to reach, if at all operating temp. Any suggestions, fan works. thanks rich
normal. there are 2 or three other threads saying the exact same thing. if you don't like it running that hot, run the fan off a switch. your only option if you don't want to use HPTuners.
turn your a/c on in traffic if it starts getting warm to run the fan.
this is normal... for all cars.
car has no a/c. I find it hard to believe that is the way it is suppose to be. Because your car is doing it or his car is does not mean it is right. Maybe the same problem.. Do the same commute in my truck and operating temps stay in the middle.
In winter I can't even get the car warm in a 35-45 minute commute which translates into no heat. Not right. Is their a bypass in this cooling system? Bad radiator? What are the symptoms of a bad head gasket? thanks ric
He said that it overflowed, you told him that was normal. Am I missing something?
Thats not normal. Coolant stay ith in the radiator...
Either your coolant fan switch is getting tired or you have a cracked head or bad head gasket.
First thing it first, check your coolant for boiling point with a tester. If you have added water too many times the boiling point drops.
The coolant fan switch is in the upper radiator hose tube, follow the upper hose to the tube , across the front of the engine, when you make the turn to go in the head there is a sensor, with 2 wires in it. thats it. to test that the fan is working properly , unplug that sensor while the engine is running, the chek engine light will turn on and the fan will turn on. this will store a code but you will know if your fan system is working correctly. the only way to know if the switch is working properly you have to watch the fans and see what temp they turn on.
A sign that you have a head problem is, lots of air bubbles in the resivoir when the engines temp gets up to normal and beyond, and if the radiator core is so hot that you cant hold your hand on it, you radiator is good.
As far as your heater goes, some J's have heater core issues, especially if your running dexcool , they plug up. But for some reason some have the problem and some dont. My buddy had 3 cores put in his with in 5 years, 2 plugged up and 1 leaked. But on the other hand I have never had any problems with mine nor have I changed any at work for customers. I just wanted to let you know that could be a possibility.
And no there isnt a bypass valve and I doubt that a bad head would cause no heat for you since the core is so far below the top of the engine, air from a bad gasket or head will most likely go the head since its the highest point.

Why does the car not reach operating temp while driving, even extended periods. In stop and go it will overheat?
whats the outside temps there?

In the morning I will drive into work 34 miles on the highway and it barely hits the low operating range. On the way home it is stop and go on the highway and if my car does not move it will overheat. temps 80-90. In winter it barely moves, the temp gauge causing no heat.
