I know this is probably something that has been mentioned on here a thousand times, but what's the best way to tell if your odometer is on it's way out. I know a dimly lit odometer is one way but what about the numbers themselves, for example right now my odometer says 111,104 and right about the middle of the 1 there is what i would call a little sliver. I guess my question is is that normal, are there some numbers on there that are going to have little slits and lines in them instead of just straight up and down and across flawless, Mine still lights up fine like normal just the numbers themselves got me to wondering. May be hard to know what i mean without a picture.
I read some where that it ment that someone has tampered with the numbers by rolling them

mines an 04 i have a digital odometer so they can't roll it back
if it was tempered it would have a red line acrossed it
It's an 04 you can't tamper with digital odometers can you.
well i figured that much, just wondered if the numbers some of them that is was maybe the start of it going out i mean the circuit boards not dim or anything you can still read the numbers etc maybe some of the numbers on there are normally supposed to have a line through them idk.
i just thought of something else if in theory i ever had to have my cluster replaced, would i only be able to get the one cluster the one with the tach or would a cluster without a tach work also. The clusters with the tach are the more common of the two right the 03-05 J's all had tach clusters from what i remember, but i thought maybe the non tach cluster was more widely used when they were still doing the mechanical odometer thing. Also would it depend on who you went through as to what kind of cluster you could get would dealers still carry or have access to a non tach cluster, or would they have access only to the type with a tach. In case i ever do have to replace my cluster. I'm sure junkyards everywhere carry clusters but not sure i would want to get one out of the junkyard because your kind of getting what you pay for where as if it comes from the dealer or factory you know it's brand spanking new.
Shifted you say any 00+ cluster would work are there any 03-05 J's out there with a non tach cluster was the non tach cluster available all the way through 05.
ok thanks, yeah i know they were standard in the sunfire but the last J i saw that had a non tach cluster and it was just a picture of one was like a 99 that's why i wondered if that one was available all the way through i think they switched after 2002 and just went with the one cluster the one with the tach.
I've seen 05 Cavaliers with no tach. Stupid, but GM does it for SOME reason...
Any 00-05 J-car cluster will swap. You can use a Cavalier or Sunfire one, it won't matter. Hell, you can run NO cluster if you want in a 00-05 car...
Mileage is stored in the BCM, which is separate from the cluster.
Lenko you said you've seen 03-05 cavaliers with no tach are those clusters rare the more common ones are the ones with the tach correct.
Nothing on a Cavalier or Sunfire can be called "rare". They're all over the place.

yea gm seems to put those clusters in their 5 spds, go figure.
Lenko yes the tach clusters are all over the place i'm talking about the one with just the speedometer the fuel gauge on the left and the c and h on the right for the temperature, you say they put those clusters in some 03-05 cavys i have yet to see one with a basic cluster if you will.
