I ve been working on rebuilding the pistions on my 95 chevy cavalier, 2.2 l, i ran down to the local pull apart and grabbed a couple of extra pistons, while cleaning them last night I noticed that the pistons are slightly diff, the ones from the pull apart are flatter on the top and the ones out of mine are more dished out. probley about an 1/8th differnet.
so my question would be is there going to be a problem?
And i think it may be from the pull apart engine could have been a 2200 but it was so tore apart i couldn't tell.
Thanks jbody
SOUNDS LIKE YOU GOT THE WRONG PISTONS.....I WOULDNT PUT THEM IN IF I WERE YOU .....ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU SAY " A COUPLE"...THAT TELLS ME 2....

my kill list:a geo metro and a mac semi wow did i kill that thing
Strange that i am seeing a pattern here?
yes i have three (3) of the deeper cut ones and (2) of the what seems to be stock ones.
so therory wise i was thinking if i used two and two i might be ok?>
but what if the other two are causing a higher compression?\ that is going to throw off the motor as well as the computer, etc
So has any one else seen a diff in the pistons between the 2200 and the 2.2l motors?
thanks
Hi,
I'm going to shout at you now......
DO NOT MIX PISTONS IN THE SAME ENGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry about that. Seriously, Install 4 pistons of the same design. If switching out pistons and keeping some, replacing others, weigh them before hand and file a little beef off of the skirt of the heavier ones to make the weights exactly the same. If you don't do this the engine will be out of balance, may never run smoothly and experience premature wear. The dish in the top also changes the compression in that cylinder by increasing the space where the gas is compressed and ignited. The dish is a most likely a lower compression engine (depending upon head design). You don't want 2 high compression and 2 lower compression pistons in the same engine, once again balance and running issues.
I'd be cautious about using used pistons unless you are 100% sure that they will fit and work properly. Proper diameter, height, dish on the top for valve clearance and compression, etc.
What happened to your 2.2 that you need a piston?
Good Luck with your project, hope it works out for you.
Dave
SO SHOULD I USE THE FLAT ONES OR THE DISHED OUT ONES? WHICH ONES WILL BE BETTER?>
\AND IF WE CAN MAKE UP OUR MINDS (LOL) I WILL JUST GET THE ONES I NEED EITHER TWO MORE FLATS OR TWO MORE DISHED OUT ONES.
SAVY?
performance wise, the flat tops... higher compression..
- Your not-so-local, untrained, uncertified, backyard mechanic. But my @!#$ runs
I would say the flat top ones. My 95 Sunfire has the 2.2 OHV engine in it. It is currently torn down for a rebuild (head cracked 3 places, figured I'd do it all while I'm at it) and the pistons are the flat top ones in it.
so flats are better huh ..ok thanks guys that what i was looking for.
if u go to go summit and order pistons for a 98 2.2 cavy and put em in ur pre 98 itl give u a 12.1 compression and new there only 30 bucks a piston there speed pro and there hyperuetic aluminum and if u got money match em eagle h beams and shell move gooooooooooooooodd and for ur top end take ur head and components in it to a machine shop and theyl match up valvetrain with aftermarket parts that will bolt up with out reasearch or guessing
if it start the next day it can be driven harder
people withthe 2.2 are using the 2200 pistons for higher compression. Bob Guptil is doing that with his race car.

12:1 huh? Were do you get that info from?

About swapping pistons...
Flat top will yield higher compression versus dished which = more power... if valves don't hit!.
Also matching more than just the top is really important. The pin location (distance from the top) needs to be the same for that to work. If its closer to the top, compression will be lower. If its further from the top, it will hit the head.
I am also going to guess that you are not just changing pistons but using the rods that are already installed on the pistons as I think its most likely that the pins are press fit on a 2.2 (I may be wrong. I don't know at all. Just my best guess), which means matching more parts up.
You would be better off buying new pistons rather than random used ones. If the donor engine is high miles the pistons can be damaged just popping them out... which you may not see until its too late and running really bad.

JBO Stickers! Get yours today!
I have a 96 2.2 and people with the 2.2 are using the 2200 pistons for higher compression yes but do we need to use the rods that come with the 2200? and how does it it you 12.1's IIRC the 2200 is a 9:8.1 and the 97 and oler 2.2 are 9:0.1"s right?

Let me put it in my own words.
