v6 swap alternator question
Monday, June 15, 2009 3:59 AM
i am using the 94-98 n body mount to put in my v6. the space for the alternator is for a older style alternator like pre 95 i think. my question is should this alternator work ok or do i need to make a custom mount to put in a newer style. i heard the second gen guys need to do it to put in the older style alt on a 3400. thanx guys.

If you use the old alternator you'll have to make the same mounting scheme that the 2nd gen guys do since they're using the same alternator. However, you could just use the alternator that came with the motor.... just have to get the plug for it which should come with the engine wire harness.

alright i think ima splice in the older plug and try it. the problem is its a 04 3500 and a older engine mount so neither the 3500 alternator or the 2.4 fit only the one that was on the car with the mount. ill have to see wat happens unless someone knows for shore.

What are you going to run the 3500 with?

Forgive me, but I'm having a hard time following your sentences. From what I gather, you got the alternator from the engine the older mount came from? If so, you should be able to use the alternator mounting brackets from that engine as well. If you have an 04 3500 then an alternator from any 99+ 3100 or 3400 will work as well, since they all mount the same.

im runnin the 3500 with 01 grand am 3400 electronics and an external crank trigger from wot-tech. the motor is in im workin on wiring it now. just startin and im already goin crazy lol its just time consuming. but i already tryed the 2.4 alternator and a small port 3100, they didnt fit. didnt figure they would but figured it was worth a shot im gonna try with the one that came off the engine that had the mount and if it dosent charge ill try a 99+ 3*00 alternator.

Out of curiosity, does your 3500 have a crossover pipe, or two separate exit exhaust manifolds?

it came with the dual header style but im tryin to find someone to trade wth because tho they perforn beter they need more exhaust fab and i just kinda want to get it runnin the cars been down since super bowl sunday.

Do you have it in the car now with those on it? We discussed a while back if the front one would fit without hitting the radiator, or at least the fan. If you do, post pics if you can.

All you need to do to get that alternator to work is hook the red wire in the plug (not the big red B+ wire, the on that goes to the F-terminal on top) to something that's hot when the engine is running. Though, it should still hook to the PCM. Well, i'm assuming the wire is red anyways. There should be 2 (or maybe more) wires going from that alternator to the PCM.

yea the manis were on in the car i just pulled them last night. it would be tight but it could be done. i didnt have the radiator in but im almost sure there would be room. the front down pipe was gonna ge tricky cuz the pipe would have to come off the manifold and bend away from the engine to avoid the starter but then not hit the radiator. like i said they would fit but be kinda tight up front. im just startin to wire everything> (sigh soooooo time consuming)

Just to get everyone up to speed, Ray and I traded exhaust mani's. UPS should be dropping both of our packages off tomorrow. After they arrive I will be taking very good pictures of the 3500 manifolds just so everyone can see them.

Radiator clearance isnt a concern with me because I shifted my radiator (alero one) forward probably 2 inches or so. The fans dont even stick out past the rad support at all.

I'd like to see the 3500 mani installed in the J mostly out of curiosity. If/when I change my manifolds, I think I'm going custom stainless headers. Nothing's going to happen with that until next year, though.

Why you so curious on those 3500 manifolds? I thought you was gonna go turbo? Or were you looking to modify a couple of them with some t3 flanges?

Bingo.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the starter and/or AC compressor are going to be too much in the way, but when I get to that point, I'm sure I'll figure it out.

I got a chance to get some comparison pics, so here are the 3500 and 3400 manifolds.

Rear lengths are almost identical, fronts on the other hand are........

The 3500 ports are a little bigger and slightly more "rectangular", still a D port but a bit wider. EGR will be easier to block off than 3400s. I will probably start on flanges and downpipe ideas next week.

I have to pull the heads now because when I pulled the sheild off of the front there was half of a manifold stud laying in it. Of course the other half is still in the head and it looks like its gonna be fun. I think Im just gonna take it to the machine shop and let them take care of it.

You need to figure out a way to get a true dual system on the cav.

A couple of turbo mufflers and small resonators and it would sound pisser.

I think someone on V6Z24.com (Superdave maybe) has a true dual on his.

Here's a cool toy for you to think of too:

It will be true duals. I have plenty of stainless 2 1/4" sitting around. I dont know for sure how I want to run it though. I was thinking about a pair of flowmasters and dumping it right before the IRS. Either that or side exits in the back of the skirts.

I just got the suspension on it and rolled it out yesterday, its been in the garage and on stands for a while.

Did you use the N-body front struts & springs, or is the engine out of it right now?

Re: v6 swap alternator question

N body stuff and the engine bay is empty at the moment. So it looks like a monster truck. When everything is in and running I will get a nice dropped n body setup on it, but I dont want to guess on how much I need to drop it.

Don't use the front N-body struts & springs, use the J-body. The rears, use the N-body.
