99 Z24 5 speed swap
Wednesday, May 19, 2010 6:57 PM
Ok, so my lady friend picked up a pretty nice, low millage, 99 Z24 cavalier. She wanted a 5 speed but we came across a deal she couldn't pass up so she settled for an automatic.

I am new to these cars and have a few questions.

#1.) What all will i need to swap a 5 speed swap this car? I know i will need a clutch/flywheel, trans,i assume a new trans mount, speedo cable, new pedal assembly, slave cylinder, new center console, and axles.. Will i need the computer out of the 5 speed car also? And am i forgetting anything?

#2.) I am going to lower it also. Nothing much, just 1.5 to 2 inches. I have read in a few threads that if you lower it to much the CV joints pull out of the tulips. I shouldn't have this problem should i? I wouldn't think so seeing as how the suspension should be able to safely flex this much and all the way to the bump stops for that matter. Lol.

#3.) I want at least a 1.5 inch drop, what drop springs have you guys had luck with? I am thinking i will go with the sportlines unless anyone says otherwise..

Thanks in advance~Drew

You're also going to have to weld in manual trans brackets for whatever trans you're going to use. And make sure you get a 2.4 trans. a 2.2 trans will not work. Definately will need a manual trans PCM or have the auto trans codes deleted from stock PCM. Get the pigtails from the manual as well (speed sensor and reverse sensor). For the springs, Eibach Sportlines are awesome and ride very well, i've had mine for 8 years and still ride and handle great. You won't have any issues with axles pulling out or falling apart as long the job is done right. Oh one more thing you have to get rid of the A/T plugs and splice you're reverse and speedo in or get a complete eng harness from a 5 speed. Manual cluster too. : )

Yeah i figured i would need the computer.. I'll just get the whole wiring harness.. Actually i'll just pull a complete drop out and eventually build the extra motor. Lol.

You have to weld in a new trans mount? Please explain. Lol.

And they put different transmissions behind the 2.4? Which one would be best for gas milage and put you in the powerband at 40mph?

If you get a car to do a complete swap from it probably won't be so bad. I think the trans mounts are on the subframe, (not 100% sure on that tho) so if you have a donor car you can probably just swap that over too and not have to weld mounts in. Otherwise, the auto uses a different mounting system than the 5spd, so the mounts have to be changed.

For the transmission though, as long as it's a 96-99 car that's your donor there's only 1 option for the 5spd that fits the 2.4.

Ok awesome.. There are quite a few z24's at my local junk yard and they have some pretty good prices, so i basically have as many donor cars as i need. Lol. I am trying to think as far ahead as possible so i can get the swap done all in one day.

Thanks for all the help guys!

I am getting ready to weld in mounts for a ecotec 5 speed swap from an LD9 Auto. Watch my thread for updates.
