Monsoon/Steering wheel radio controls
Saturday, August 13, 2005 11:17 AM
Ok I posted this like a real long time ago. Hopefully some one here has an update.
I am going to try to attack this once again.

I got these steering wheel radio controls( from the 96-99 S/F) and I want to hook it up to the Monsoon stock unit (2002). I know its possible becaue the the Grand-Am has the same radio and steering wheel radio functions.

-My questions are, has some one tried this out?
-Can some one pass the headunit wiring diagram for the Monsoon in the Sunfire and/or Grand-Ams?
-What harness could I use here?
-Can some one give me any type feed back on this?

Espcially if you own a Sunfire with these controls.

I know it can be done. But I am gonna need some help or ideas.

thanks in advance

Except for one, nobody gives a flying phuck on this huh.

I found out that I may need "coil rest module..." that houses the airbag wire and UB3 <(?)wire, which I think that is the wire to the controls. But the delar wanted $150
GMPD wanted like $100 I believe.

I have the harness from the 96-99 sunfire and the actual controls. Now I need to know which pin do I have to connect on the car's radio harness to get control and power.

If someone can give me radio schematics on a 96-99 Sunfire and 2000-2005 Grand-am, it may help.

I have a 97 sunfire with the steering wheel controls. When I replaced my deck I just left the controls and everything together. I can get in there tomorrow and see where the wires hook in if that would help?

^^Yessss it so would help.

Can you tell me...
On the steering wheel, the controls is held up by two screws and placed under the airbag. On my airbag, the fit leaves me a gap, how does yours fit? Does your airbag have a gap so the controls fit flush under airbag? In other words, what does your unit has look well integrated? Does your airbag looks different then 95-02 sunfires with no SWRCs?

Any help will be so appriciated.

I'll be able to tell for sure tomorrow, but when I had my steering wheel apart to change my headlight switch it looked like the airbag was shaped so that there would be a gap when the controls were removed. I'll make sure to look at that too. I got out of work early so I'm actually gonna go do that now probably so I'll let you know tonight in a few hours. I'll have my laptop out there with me so if you're on in the next couple hours hit me up on instant messenger if there's anything you want me to check.

Ok I am going to attack it AGAIN!

So far I've gathered is this.

-I will need a new airbag pad that can retain these controls
-I got the 96-99 harness with a fuse that connects radio and steering wheel controls as I will have to splice there and connect to stock 2002 harness
-I (may) need connector part #12092163 connector, inline-to strg col harness (4-way male)
-I will need the coil rest module (coil clock) #26087272 this is the piece that harness the airbag wire and in this case the Steering Wheel Radio Controls wire. This will be need as so that the wires do not tangled.

Here is the major problem after the 2000 J and N body went to another system of harness I think called class-2.
GM parts dealers can't get individual wires for these.
As I try to find the wires of a 2002 Pontiac Grand-Am GT with this radio and SWRC

*****So my question to the is this:******
--Could a parts guy from here look up the wires needed for the the connection between SWRC and Radio on a 96-99 Sunfire and 2002-2005 Pontiac Grand-Am with Monsoon and SWRC?
--Can someone pass me the radio schematics on the Grand-AM 2002-2005 to where to plug this in?
--Is the driver's airbag connection different from 96-99 to 00-02? So I can use that ^ coil clock?

Any help will so be appreciated

Lol...I acquired a set of them with a leather steering wheel I bought off e-bay for 15 bucks

Definitely listening in, even though I just switched out my Monsoon for a full-din Alpine

Bringing this back from the dead.

I think I will be attack this soon.
I have:
The SW control.
The Airbag so I can adapt the SW control.
The clockspring for the SW control.
The radio harnesss for the SWRC and Radio.

I would like try to see if this works. Now my draw backs:
1.The air bag is not a 2000+ version so I'm worried the moment I connect it, it will pop. If any one can chime in if this is true, please let me know.
2.I will need to remove wires from the harness and try to figure out the pin out on a 2000+ Monsoon. I figure a power and signal between controls and radio. (?)

Any input that can help me out?

As long as the connectors on the air bag are the same is *shouldn't* blow. The air bag only really accepts a positive and negative from the modules when it blows so they should pretty much all be the same.

Issue with the volume controls is going to be the 2000+ runs on a class 2 data bus for the radio, where the 95-99 does not.

The connectors would not be the same, if I remember correctly, the wires are the same except for the connectors. I can change the connectors as they are snapped in. My thing is will my car's SIR computer recognize appropriately this new (older model though) airbag?

That is true. I am running on the assumption since the 2000+ Grand-Ams came with the controls and it uses the same Class-2 system, that there could be a adaptability. From what i'm thinking, it will work if only I find the schematics on the Grand-Am's harness side. I've searched endlessly for the schematics and all I get is the basic functions/radio diagrams.

I think it should recognize it.
I think of it like this. How do you disable the warning light when you put on an aftermarket steering wheel? You hook a resistor up. Theory says the computer is only testing to make sure that there is an actual airbag there and it does it by seeing if there is resistance on the line. I'm almost positive they should be the same resistance between the years. I'd say to test the resistance of the airbag but I'd hate to see you blow one accidentally. It shouldn't but I've seen weirder things happen.

Our cars should be very similar.
Looks like dark blue is the data feed for the controls.

I see exactly what you're saying. Call me paranoid, but I would like if this true. I know the airbag's computer have changed, but I don't know if the bags are interchangeable. I know early bags have full force airbags, later GM changed to depowered bags, not sure if GM advanced afterwards to a dual stage design.

That is definitely a start when it comes to the SWRC...TY. I will have to look at the harness to see how it lines up. By any chance would you have a 2000-2005 Grand am or 2002+ bonneville, Aztek radio schematic?

Oh that's great.
By any chance you wouldn't have the pin out for connector and radio to that?
I'm going to have to look at this closer with my pieces, (i'm going by memory) but there may be progress in terms of matching up the connections.
