A different power wire question
Monday, September 12, 2005 9:57 AM
Ok, ok, i know, there have been alot of power wire questions, especially lately.

I want to simplofy my Acc Power wiring.

Do you think it would be ok to take two 8awg wires and put one across the inner dash, and anohter across the inner trunk. Ending them either with a larger rubber cap or soldiering them back on themselves.

The reason is, im tired of Tapping into the 3 stock power wires in the car, that i know of.

This way i can Fuse both, and any acc, just tap into the 8 guage, Soldier the connection, and wrap. And i know that the size of the wire connecting to the 8 awg will limit current anyhow.

I figure this would clean up my under dash and trunk wiring up quite a bit.

Example: Every red wire, is a power wire. all connections are crimped and soldered.

you mean run one big wire to hook all your accessories to?

id imagine that would work fine, as long as you have a big ass fuse on it

i think what you'd want to do is this.......count up your accessories you have now and add up the fuses, and on the big wire use that size fuse, 90amp or whatever the total is

then wehre you tap it off to each accessory put in an inline fuse with the fuse for that accessorry......like ths

===60amp====I======I========I=======I======I=======I
I I I I I I
10amp 10amp 10amp 10amp 10amp 10amp
I I I I I I
nitrous gauges radio pedal neons light up
lights shifter

i think that would work, if not then, hey, at least i tried

yes it will work just fine...u should definitly fuse the 8 ga....i dunno what they current they can carry is in the car but fuse it as high as possible....fuse it as hi as u can by ratings becuase say u only fuse it to what u have on it now lets say for numbers 40 amps.....if u try to add something and its 20amps....u are going to blow that same 40 amp fuse over and over again.....another great idea would be to use a few relays...they sell a "fog light" wiring kit at walmart by apc....it has a 30 amp relay in it.....any after it recieves power it draws up to 30 amps of power directly from the battery to power what ever it is u wanna power....if u have any questions i can draw up a diagram or two and explain things better but i do alot of lighting and 12v electrical so im sure i can find a solution..............ur idea should work fine i would recomend making a switch box that the 8ga wire feeds and just use that to power all switchs so u don't have the need for a bunch of seperate powers

instead of doing what you originaly said, do the distro block... they sell fused ones also, so its safer also

Now i know how the 2 way and 3 way distro boxs work, after all i have a 4 gauge running (2) 8 gauge wires for my subs.

So Let me get this straight. I run a power wire, Fused of coarse, and run a distro box off that, power one side and use it to fuse and connect all my other power leads, right?

The only distro boxs i find readily are for only 5 fuses, max of 20 amps in total, and they tell you specificly not to power all one side of the connections with one power wire.

Would an Audio distro box work? There is a huge audio shop sale this weekend in Freeport, 20-70% off everything in stock, if that would work, ill see about getting it there.

Thanks for the link, I just happened to check the red X.

That works perfectly. So i can pretty much run any length of power wire to the distro block, And run my others wires off that. Correct?

I know i keep asking stupid questions over and over, But i want to make damn sure i dont kill anything in my dash board.

oops lol guess i clicked the image link instead of the hyper link or somethin lol...anywy...
yea just make sure you put a inline fuse in close to the battery , make sure its the proper size for the wire you use...they sell different size blocks also... just check out http://www.waytekwire.com might as well get a catalog from them, they have a lot of nice stuff for electronics

Uh, this is not a good idea. When you connect more an more things to a power wire in parallel (which is how you're connecting it) the resistance goes down. Lowering the resistance will increase the current draw. Basically you're going to pop fuses like it's going out of style.

What you need is a relay, and then do what you've said. You'll have your Acc wire, and a +12v wire that go into the relay, then you can hook up as many other wires as you want. When the Acc is on, it lets the 12v go through the relay, when it's off, it doesn't.

I didn't read the whole thread, so if i'm way off base, sorry, but i think i caught the majority of what you guys were talking about.
