Help With Deck Install
Monday, April 10, 2006 11:31 AM
hey guys i got a 2000+ cavalier and my chime comes out of my doors, everywhere i go for a install said i need a 150$ harness cause the airbags and abs are connected to it..said if i do it with the 5$ harness my airbags and abs wont work, i checked the faqs and said only chimes and onstar wont work, is that true or is visions right? i belive this site more but when i told them that they said i was wrong..can anyone clarify this before i rip it out and do it myself with the 5$ harness?? thanks guys

Anyone that tells you you're going to lose your airbags or anything other than your chimes is full of @!#$. I just did this myself, had a deck installed in my 2000 cavy and futureshop wouldn't do it unless they used the $90 harness so i told them to go screw themselves and went to a real installer downtown. They do cars for GM dealerships and are certified to do GM stereo installs and they said they don't even use the expensive harness. Just use the $5 harness, you won't miss anything. I find it a relief to have those chimes gone.

go get a 2000 chevy trail blazer harness and do it yourself. you WILL lose your chimes but your are bags and abs ARE NOT connected in any way to your radio. do the install yourself, save some money, and gain some knowledge.

yeah im sorry guys, i posted then searched and found all the info needed, i feel like an ass but thanks for the info, but i took apart the dash and got the radio out, and i spliced all my wires from the deck to the factory harness, but the factory has a extra purple and black and grey and know one is the chime but i have the power grnd and speakers hooked up and it doesnt turn on....any sugestions...maybe i need the gm harness ?? im using the one that came with the alpine deck...thanks (i searched for that answer..the wire diagram on the page doesnt show the extra 3 wires. thx

i'd use the harness instead of just splicing in. its only 5 bucks. the reason that none of the shops will touch the stereo is because "supposedly" the power wire for the stereo is the same color as the wire for the air bags. splicing and cutting isn't a good idea.

and you'll have to run a wire from your new headunit to the wiper fuse for the ignition wire so it'll work.

how can i find where this wiper wire is...is it going to be hard to find or do u know somewhere that knows the location of this? im going to go pu a universall 2000+ gm wire harness from canadian tire its like 11.99 cad and that should end my problems? i guess ill have to rewire the factory harness clip back on also right?

wire the factory harness back on. and please don't just use black tape. at the least, get the plastic wire connectors that you crimp the wires together with.

i dont know about the universal adapter...just go to an audio shop or circuit city/best buy (not sure if you have those in canada) and ask for a harness for a 2000 chevy trailblazer.

the wiper fuse is in the fuse box on the drivers side of the car on the side of the dash. its not the only fuse you can use, just the most common. get a light tester and find a fuse thats ONLY on when the igntion is on. the fuse will light the tester up when the key is on, and won't light it up when the key is off.

i only go into detail because i'm not sure of your abilities...plus it'll help the next person who asks questions.

well, i don't know for sure if the universal one will work, so i won't be the guy who tells you yes for sure. if you can wait, you can order it from bestbuy or circuit city.com

otherwise, try out the universal i guess.

tell the best buy guy thanks from the j-body.org for actually knowing what hes doing.

the other shop- bring your car back to them, with the radio installed, and prove to them that they are wrong. tell them you'll spread the word about how they dont know what they are doing, and that they are pompous asses. i did it about one local shop, and although i doubt its from me alone, they are closing shortly.
