system problem
Wednesday, July 19, 2006 9:39 PM
Ive got 2 subs and an amp pushing around 1200-1600 watts but the problem is every now and then the amp will cut out on me saying that the current is to low/high.... I was thinking that mayb I might need a bigger battery but Im not going to get a battery just to push my system its going to push the entire car (b/c getting a separate battery is just goin to weight down the car even more). I was also thinking that it could b my alternator and that I might need a stronger one but Im not sure so does anyone no what could be causing this problem and how I can fix it cause I cant figure it out?

you gain could be too high also, might wanna bring that down a bit, see if that helps

What guage wiring are you using? Have you checked for a loose ground?

Im running 4-gauge wiring

Also, if your amp is really really hot when it cuts out like that, you may want to consider some kind of cooling method. most transistors have a max. operating temp, and max. rate at which they can dissipate heat. hot transistors won't maintain the correct voltage (insert technical stuff no one wants to hear) and may throw your current around. then again, like usual...it's probably just the ground...

the other option is get the bigger cap to place more load on the cap instead of the battery. i know i can do that with my cap and i had dimming problems when i first started.

I have a cap its a Rockford Fosgate 1000 watt, should I get another one or what

dont get a cap. they are a waste of money. (waits for someone to come in and correct me)

1/ do the big three wiring.
take the hundred bucks you were gonna use and get a better battery or save for a new alternator.

4 gauge wire in that long of a run will usually only suffice for about athousand watts. does your wire get warm? if so you may want to go bigger.
what amp do you own and what impedence are your woofers. and what wiring config are they?

Um, /me throws out the capacitor.

I think he might be clipping, cause usually when you clip, you draw a good bit of extra current. Do you have a multimeter? Check the ohms of your speakers.

I agree with n8ball and lanman, check to make sure your amp isnt clipping the signal, that can overheat the amp and the clipped output can cause damage to your subs over the long run. Upgrade the big 3, that will improve the charging effect of the alternator.

For the system itself, upgrade to 2 gauge wire, like n8ball said 4 gauge is only good for 800-1000 watts in our cars.

Caps are only handy for high wattage systems that could drain 1/5th of a battery in a matter of minutes, so dont waste your money on them.

But as it stands, upgrade the charging system wiring. Bump the power and ground wires for the amp to 2 gauge. And make sure the amp isnt clipping.

Freakin morons.... When will they learn. Hold On Not Done Accelerating
