Another Class-2 Rumor - Audio & Electronics Forum

Hey All. I had a tech install my Pioneer head unit (I had trouble soldering the lead) and, he said my 03 Cavalier was "One of the first he's seen" that has a data wire. He, and his co-workers, said that the airbags might not deploy in the event of an accident. I found this hard to believe, and they wanted me to buy a certain wire harness with a daisy-chained data wire that connected to a seperate box that will let me keep chimes, "And will make my airbags work" That was a cool $130. I told him forget about it.
I just wanted to make sure that it was simply another rumor about class-2 and that the only thing I will be losing is my idiot-chimes. Thanks!
You won't lose anything but chimes.
Those daisy chain stupid things are 50 bucks made by schosce were the hell do they get 130. F that its a plug in module yeah it keeps the chimes which is a nice satey net sometimes.
scoshe? mine is made by ventura

The one he showed me was a Scoshe and said that every single time he has done a stereo upgrade on a Cavalier without it, "sooner or later the Airbag light will come on and might not even go off during an accident."
My bull-@!#$ sensor went off and told him I was all set. He made it sound like it was something new, "Everyone knows that the chimes will be gone, but did you know that we just found out the air bags may not even deploy?"
just found out???
the car is 3-4 years old for pete's sake!!

in a j-body ONLY...they are all right...and your airbags, oil system, and whatever other bullsnot they can come up with have NOTHING to do with your radio...on ANY JBODY OF ANY YEAR. the only thing you will lose is chimes. ive personally installed in every generation j-body..cavaliers and sunfires...NEVER had a problem.

this useless post brought to you by the alcoholic known as LUNDiS
The airbag rumour comes from Honda's... apparently their radios actually do more than just receive data and play chimes, like ours do. (News to me, I don't know Honduhs)
The N-body cars radios are used for resetting the oil life light. That's it.
The airbags are an entirely different system in the car. Airbags are part of the dash harness. The radio is part of the body harness. The only things they really have in common are the power and ground...
My airbags deployed on my 04 with no chime harness.....

I agree with Lundis, I too have been installing for way too long and you won't have any problems with your car except chime and not having an accessory line in your factory radio harness. Let me guess, the guy you were talking to worked for Best Buy. No offense BB employees, but that's what you're taught.

We used to tell people to use the cheap harness at our Circuit City, but a customer that had a radio put in at another location wrecked and apperently their airbags didn't go off. I realize it's not because they didn't have the expensive harness, but they sued CC so we are no longer allowed to tell them about the cheaper harness at my store.

I would LOVE to see some proof of this rumour.... fact is, you'll never find it.
What the f*** would you do, if your stock deck was stolen by some junkie? OMG the car is USELESS now the stock deck is gone!!
Think about it folks... no one in their right mind would route the airbags thru the stock deck. It's the most common thing in the car to be replaced.
I agree, I'm not trying to say the rumor is true. You're right it wouldn't make sense. I don't know if they were successful in the suit or not, but we've been told to only sell the module from now on. If it's someone I know then I just tell them to get the harness.

I'll back Chris on this, I work for a custom audio shop now but I used to work for Circuit back in the day. Circuit may not always have the lowest price, but you can bet that what they sell and install won't leave you up $h!t creek without help. Remember, stupid people, do stupid things, and sue for stupid reasons..... that's why we have stupid rules.
Also, you don't have to trust the shop, just the installer.
My 2.4 when stock would still beat your rice fart cannon.

Absolutely. The markup on all the kits and harnesses is rediculous. They just bumped all the kits and harnesses from 17-18 bucks up to 20 and the antenna adaptors from 13 to 15.

people sue for all sorts of reasons but a simple layer who knows how to do any bit of research would win the case easy since in our cars that wiring has absolutly nothing to do with the airbags.

the honda civic thing you are talking about is it is used to control the keyless entry. and maybe power locks. Its only certain years though.
Yeah it's like 96-98s I believe. The keyless entry and domelight both go through the radio. They don't make a module for that car though, just a T harness.

I love the ppl that actually recite this bull at CC and best buy, i dont think anyone at those places actually knows anything about audio

I got the airbag excuse at CC. Then I ran over to Tweeter and they were happy to sell me a T-harness for $25.

However, don't test probe the yellow jacketed wiring harnesses. Those have airbag wiring in them. I remember the CC rumors back when I was the NE Regional display tech. There was the guy in a wheelchair in California because he installed a head unit in a Cavalier without removing the battery cable (BS). There were a few more, but who retains all of that BS?
why do you guys not install your own equipment? It's very easy to do.
and when buying the harness, dont ask for one for a cavalier ask for the tracker harness

The airbag wiring doesn't even run close to the radio... so it would be pretty darn difficult to probe it while installing a radio anyway
I don't think I've ever removed the airbag fuse (ok, maybe the first time I did my first 2000 Z24 back in May 2000)... and I know I've never ever taken the negative cable off.
But then again... I use the Tracker harness (Metra 70-2003) and never cut wires... so..
