Just installed a new deck, alpine type-r sub, and an alpine mrp-m450 amp in my girl's car. The sub gets nice and loud, but only when I turn up the head unit's "bass level". The result is that there is way too much bass coming from the front and rear speakers and the music sounds awful. The speakers don't distort, it just sounds like you turned off all the treble.
So what should i do to fix this problem? Bass blockers? some kind of EQ? any suggestions would be appreciated.
Are the front speakers stock or some aftermarket ones? If stock then your best bet is some bass blockers. If aftermarket, amp them ona HPF

"Laying in bed one night, I said "Where did I go worng?". Then I heard a voice say "This is going to take a while..."
Does the deck have a separate sub control?? If so why not turn it up and then turn the bass down, or if the deck has a HPF then adjust it so no bass will play in the speakers.
They speakers are stock. I'm sure the high pass deal will work fine once they are replaced, but for now i need another solution. The deck does have a seperate sub control, but it is also maxed.
That's the problem, turning the bass down at the headunit basically eliminates the bass output from the sub. By listening to it with the "bass level" at 0, you'd think the amp gains were down all the way or the seperate sub control was down all the way. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
If it's an alpine deck.... take it out, and plug the RCA's into the sub output. I don't like the new alpine decks, because they do exactly like you described. It'll sound good as long as you use the sub out, and turn up the subwoofer level.

i noticed the same situation with an alpine i installed recently. The sub only performed well when the sub level on the headunit was at max.

its a 9841 i believe. I know its a bottom of the line model, but so was my 9803 and I love everything about it. Unfortunately they don't make it anymore.
Corsica Dude: There's only one set of pre-outs so I don't think that's the problem.
Maybe i'll hook it up to my headunit just as a comparison and see what happens.
Thanks for the help everyone.
one set of preouts? Crap....

So.... 1 preout and sub level control... have you tried turning up the sub level? Might be a stupid question, but it's worth a shot. I'm really not liking alpine headunits right now... I have a hard time tuning them because they're picky.
Just a question but if you have the manual to the deck is there a way to set up your 1set of preouts as a dedicated sub out ? b/c maybe thats why the sub level is maxed and your not getting anything from it b/c thats what my prob. was on my jvc I had to go to the menu and select the preout between REAR mode and WOOFER mode once I set it to WOOFER my subs KICKED!!!! otherwise if thats not the case post the specs of you deck, sub, amp, and box type. I'll see if I can help you!!!
