Hey all. I currently have a pretty nice pair of Pioneer 4x6 speakers for my front doors. They sound nice but at high volume levels there is some pretty noticeable distortion. I was wondering if buying 6 1\2's for the front doors would make a noticeable difference in sound quality. I was going to go with some Pioneer Premier 6 1/2's which have 40 more watts RMS than my current set, but I've heard good things about Infinity and I love my current Infinity Amp \ Sub combo. Can anyone recommend a nice pair of 6 1/2's? Thanks!
i went from pioneer 4x6's to a set of infinity reference 6 1/2 components. made a world of difference. i would recommend it 100 times to anyone. if you search, me and another guy on the website put together a how-to with pictures and directions on how to make the speaker brackets and do the install.
GO PATS!!!
Redneck, what model of Infinity componets did you buy? What are the deal with componet speakers anyways? I'm new to car stereo stuff and I thought componets needed their own amp and have a complicated set-up. Can you break that down for me?
i got the infinity 4x6 and turned the amp to high pass for the front they sound awesome no distortion and i leave the bass to the subs

You're missing a LOT though. Midbass is tasty.

Component speakers use a separate speaker for high and mid range and connect them with a crossover. It allows the speakers to be used for their most efficient frequencies.
infinity kappa's PWN!!! ive got them rigged up in the rear, and i got my 6.5" components for the front for christmas...just gotta paint my kick pods. you'll be glad you did!!

I'm pretty glad i switched to 6.5's they make a real differnce in sound quality and just pure voume. Make sure you use an amp though. I am using a set of hertz components, which i purchased from a high end stereo retailer.. Dont buy the junk they sell at a chain store.

Thanks Brad, I'm sure it sounds stupid but I had no idea what they were. So, when installing a componet system, you connect the left and right from speaker wires comming from your deck to the crossover, then install \ connect the 6 1/2's normally? Do you drill \ modify your door panel to install the tweeters? Thanks again for the info, sorry my questions sound dumb :-)
Generally, it will look like this. One set of these goes in each door. You can replace the amp with a deck if you dont have one yet.
Tweeters can be put anywhere. I have them drilled into a piece of mdf which is also acting as a mount for my mids. Some people make holes in the doors and put them there. I'm thinking of putting them on the dash and pointing them at the window.
Put some duct tape on the back of the tweeters after everything is wired up and experiment with different locations.
I am looking at a few pairs of Infinity Kappa \ Reference componet systems, however I can't amp them. (I don't have the dough nor do I want to do it) Are nicer-end componets like those not even worth getting if you don't amp them?

i have the infinity reference components unamped. sounds awesome. i'll soon be amping them cuz they'll sound even better, but you won't regret buying them even without an amp...mine haven't been amped the entire year and a half i've owned them. i also just bought some infinity refrence 6x8s...they're awesome too. can't really go wrong with infinity.
GO PATS!!!
I was thinking of getting
these Infinity Reference componets, however many of the reviews say don't bother getting them if you don't amp them. But, as long as the sound is really loud with minimal tweeter distortion I think I'll buy those. Thanks again Redneck.
Did you mount your tweeters in the door panel?
those are the one's i have. i say absolutely get them. mine aren't amped and still sound ten times better than the pioneer 4x6's i replaced. amp can always be done later. my pioneer setup used to crackle at volume 25 on my stereo. now i have infinity reference components and reference 6x8's and i can crank it to around 40 (max of 50) before there's any distortion. they don't NEED to be amped...it'll probably just make them sound more amazing.
and i didn't want to make any holes. so when i had my cavalier, i used velcro and put the tweeters on the door panel up by where the interior trim panel that covers the mirror screws is.
GO PATS!!!
Awesome. I'm definetly going to buy them now. I was real bummed out when I heard that they are pretty poor when not amplified, but I can't wait to get them. Can you point the tweeters a certain way? I'm thinking about flush-mounting them somewhere in the door panel.
they've got a flush mount pod and a directional mount pod included...get them, you won't regret it.
GO PATS!!!
