I am getting 2 alpine type R 1222D Subwoofers and i was wondering what would be a good amp to hook up to it. I am probably going to keep them at 2ohm. Should i go with one amp or 2, and if i go with 1 amp, what would be everyones suggestion so i can get the most from the sub and not kill it?

maybe dual alpine monoblocks? matching different parts of the system never hurts, plus, if you have an alpine head unit, you could probably control the amps from the head while your in the drivers seat, instead of runnin back and forth while tuning.
I never really looked into JBL cause i dont often hear about their car applications. How good are their amps? I was looking at the kicker amps or maybe gettin a few MRP-850s alpines. I dont have my deck as of yet but planning on ordering that within the next week or 2. So in like 2 weeks, i should have everything but the doors and amp for the doors. BTW, this isnt for my Z (i had to leave it in cali for the time being). Im doing an install on my 02 explorer. yeah i know it should be in the "other cars forum" but i figured i would get better responses in the audio one. On another note, would a ported box sound better than sealed in an SUV?
I would deffently go ported with those subs. Also the JBL GTO1201.1 is a great amp for the money. I have done alot of testing with them and i have only one complaint, and that is it only accepts up to 4ga and i wish it accepted 1/0. It produces over rated power and will run as low as 1 ohm daily. For the price, the amp is top on my list.

So does the JBL's put out enough power to sufficiently run the 2 alpine type R's? the peak on each sub is 1500. i want to run between 1800-2100 watts at any given time... dont want to push them any much more than that if i dont have to. I think i am going to wire them up to be at their 2ohm for each sub then run the wires to a mono amp. Im not worried if i have to keep the wire at 4ga cause i dont think it needs any more than that. i plan on doing 1/0 to a distrobution block that has 2 or 3 4ga outs. my other question is that if i wire each sub as their own at 2ohm then wire to the same amp, can i use a distribution block to bring the wires together as one wire to the amp or is there another way i can go?
Dont worry about peak power, on anything. Peak power means nothing, rms is what you wana pay attention to. The JBL amp will power them great. The type r includes a bannana plug for wiring the coils in parallel or series. Just wire each sub in series using the included jumpers and wire each sub dirrectly to the amp to wire both subs together in parallel for a finaly load of 2 ohms.

so i can run 2 positive wires and 2 neg wires to the amp terminals with no problems? I ordered my subwoofers off the ebay store "autosounds4less". it says they are brand new and not refurb's so i hope they come with the bananna plugs and jumpers as they are new subs.
Correct, the JBL GTO1201.1 has dual positive and negitive out puts.

thats for a mono setup? humm. well im looking at JBL's website and i dont see the 1201.1 on it, did they discontinue it?
Yes its a mono amp, it just has internal connected out puts for wiring. I guess they discontinued the gto1201.1 and replaced it with the GTO14001. Alot of the sites still have the GTO1201.1's. Here is a link to the amp, you dont have to purchase it from here but it gives you an idea.

That Jbl Gto1201.1 amp is a great amp. I have one and trying to find another for a good price. But I can't seem to find these amps anywhere. When a mono amp has two speaker connections the outputs are wired in parallel with each other. I have mine with 4ohms going to each speaker terminal and the amp sees 2ohm. They just do that to make it easier. I barely fit my 4guage on the power terminals by the way. I still like the amp though.
Do you guys know where to find another gto1201.1?
Those are pretty high prices compared to what I paid for a brand new Jbl Gto1201.1.

I bought mine for $242.00 shipped with warranty. And it was BNIB also. I thought it was a good deal at the time. So I guess you don't know where they are for that price?
I personaly never seen them go that cheap, i remember about a year or so back they were around 259ish plus shipping, but i never remember them that cheap. Were did you get yours from?

A store on ebay. He had it for buy it now and one for auction. Once I seen the buy it now price I jumped on it. The auction one actually went for more money then the buy it now price. He had two for buy it now I should of bought both.
So I can keep my subs at 2ohm and run both subs to that 1 amp and have a 2ohm stable across the board? that puts out 557watts RMS, But if i use the right stuff and have it all grounded properly, i should see a little more than that or what?
what amp you talking about? & where you get the wattage? If its the Jbl Gto1201.1 amp. You could just have you subs wired in series-parallel with each other then run a single wire to the amp. Then the amp would see 2ohm. If both subs are dual 2ohm subs.
Or you could put both dual 2ohm subs in series which will make each sub 4ohm. Then you have one wire coming off each sub and have 2 wires going to the amp. The amp will see a 2ohm load by doing this.
but if it has 2 sets of speaker terminals, couldnt i just run 1 sub to 1 set of terminals and the other sub to the other set and still see a 2ohm load? the RMS wattage i got was off of sonicelectronics website... said 1114x1 but halfing that would make it 557 watts RMS for each sub?
oh i see watts for each sub. I thought you were thinking different ohms or something. Yes you could just run one sub to one terminal. Then the other sub to the other terminal. Just have both subs wired in series so each sub is 4ohm. Then the amp will see a 2ohm load.
well, i thought that since the amp is a mono amp (1 channel) and it has 2 sets of speaker outputs, isnt that meaning that its running those 2 sets of terminals off of that one channel path? So shouldnt I be able to keep them at 2ohms (each sub) and run each speaker to each set of terminals at 2ohms and see that same 2ohm load or would that be the same as trying to run the speakers in parallel for a .5ohm load (which would fry that amp). Please bare with me as i have no experience with mono amps.
Do you have dual 2ohms subs?
