How loud before replacing glass and seals?
Tuesday, December 02, 2008 7:24 PM
Ok, so I don't own my cav anymore, sold it to a co-worker. Before selling it I dynomat'd the entire car, the trunk twice and put a nice system in there. Well, he has turned it into a SPL competition car and is starting to hit respectable numbers. His last competition he hit 149 and took second in a bass race. He's about to put up a wall, not too sure what he's going to run 1 or 2 18" audiopipe's I believe is what he said.

Anyhow, my question is, what levels have people reached before they started to worry about busting windows or the seals around the windows. The car is starting to leak water in the trunk area, but I believe that's due to the crappy seal on the aftermarket tails. What does everyone suggest? he's hoping to hit in the 160-170db area by next summer.

Thanks for any help!

Jason

all i need to say is good luck hitting the 160-170 mark...if you are talking about a j-body.

I blew a hole in my seal on my front window i think and I only have 450 watts to a 15" Fi BL. Whistles like a mofo when it gets under 25 degrees outside.

I will be shocked if he gets that loud as well, but he's working with a really good shop and they never expected to hit close to 150 before and now want to push the envelope.

He said they're wanting to do plexiglass in the rear when the setup the wall, but that's a lot of $$$. I dunno, it's his car now, so I guess it's his problem if he blows the seals and all

There is no way you guys are pushing close to 150 with 450 watts to a single 15, unless you have the most efficient 15 in the world. I'm also tossing up the flag if the OP's system is in his reg is the one that went with the car, that his buddy so called hit 149. I hit 146 with my setup, and that's with cancellation. With a new box I'll be well over 150.

No no no, the guy who has my old car is not running the system I had. He is running a 1500w amp, not sure what brand and two audiopipe's...not sure which model.

I'm just wondering if he would really need new rear glass. I'm not into spl so I have no clue at what points you need to start worrying about things. The guy had asked for my opinion is why I even bothered to ask as I don't really know.

You people are missing the question, the question is at what point do you need to be concerned with blowing seals and windows. Get your head out of your a** as this is not a who's got bigger balls dispute about SPL and who can prove who right or wrong, so if you are not going to contribute anything constructive, you can not contribute at all.

I'm not on that site....that you mentioned.

Oh, and i didn't say I am hitting 150 w/ a 450w amp. I just mentioned it doesn't take much to tear apart a cavalier.

I think its safe to say your not going to be loud enough to have any problems.

I must have the factory freak then, because I haven't blown any of my seals with my setup. As for the OP, Steven hit it right. Your boy is going to need big power and big cone area, and I doubt he is.

Sounds about like what I was thinking, the place he's going to is trying to take him for a ride on the glass. Thanks for the info and if he does end up going big and blowing out seals and windows, I'll be sure to post back at what db it happened, lol.

lets see it then.
I'd be damn impressed if he does. I get windshield flex, but i still don't ever see enough happening in a J to break it. Now the seal yes, but not blowing it, just making an air leak yes..

Sorry guys, but if the maniac that is Lanman isn't blowing seals with his setup, I highly doubt you guys are. I have seen old people driving bone stock cars with leaky windshields. People who get into the audio hobby and want to show their stuff off, always jump to conclusions that when something goes wrong, it is because their audio system is so awesome.

well it all happend when I first got the sub though....so it is a good chance when the windshield moves when it isn't supposed to...
Just gets super annoying when it is cold out, whistles only when the bass hits.

Most likely the seal on your windshield was already damaged to begin with, and you just never noticed it because there was never enough pressure in the car to make it noticeable.

Your buddy won't hit loud enough to worry about windows blowing. Not without a ton of money and work, even then it's doubtful in our cars.
Most don't have issues until 160+, unless there is a pre-existing chip/crack which is easy to spider further.

Talk to Wysi and N8 about their wall builds. Not sure if they still post here or not.

Nate does once in a while. Don't think I have seen Wysi recently
