Cluster, Shifter, HVAC Lights...
Thursday, December 25, 2008 4:56 PM
...all went out when I was going up the freeway tonight.

Bummer. Couldn't tell how fast I was going.

I shut it off, the warning lights come on and off as usual, but the speedomoter, gas gague, etc. don't come back on. The shifter on my automatic, you know, P R N D 3 2 1, won't light up and also the hvac. Most likely a fuse, im assuming, but which one?

If its not the cluster lights, then what else would it be?

Hey, When I installed A/C in mine I had to change the Body Control Module and had to get another one yet, since I was lucky enough to get one that had been recalled for having a problem with interior lighting, If my Instrument light dimmer was set to low or changed with lights on it would make them shut off until I turned it back up and shut the car off and restart.

Mine is an 03 but 04 would be the same, good luck

OK, so ive tried new fuse after new fuse. Blows it every time. I discovered my fog lights dont work now, too. I dont have anything wired to the cluster etc, so the fuse.. shouldnt be overloaded?
Ive been told its a loose wire or something...

If it blows it right away it sounds as if a wire could be grounding out somewhere, possibly could have been rubbing somewhere against metal somewhere, also i hear theres some module under the platform the battery sits on which is prone to corrosion, not sure if that can possibly affeft the interior lights though.
If your car has a remote starter installed check around there for wires that may not be taped up correctly and shorting out. Ive seen this happen a few times where installers are in a hurry and seemingly forget.
In the next day or so i will have access to my computer with Mitchell and i'll see if i can find some more specific places to look.

Hey, ive checked out the wiring diagrams and come up with a pretty good idea, does the fuse blow only after you switch the lights on? if so theres a brown wire coming from the park lamp switch and eventually makes its way to the back of the car...perhaps it could have rubbed against metal somewhere and is grounding out...it may take a good look around. if it blows right away i would say its the brown wire going to the switch from the panel. if you like i can send some diagrams.

So we've torn this car apart looking for shorted out, pinched, any wierd looking wires there could be, and even tried replacing the left side light switch. still no luck.

Working parts:
-Running Lights
-Hazard
-Blinkers
-Brake Lights
-High Beams
-Mileage Counter

Non-Working Parts:
-Fog Lights
-Head Lights (but will work when i click the FOB unlock button, they flash like normal)
-Interior Cluster
-Shifter Lights
-Tail Lights
-HVAC Lights
-Those Light that light up the License Plate.

I'm about ready to either kick it or take it to the dealership garage and spend $$$.

I've already been pulled over for it. gah.

i had this problem on my sentra a while ago, and i finally took it into a shop and they found a pinched wire in the steering column... luckily i knew the guy at the shop and only got a $100 charge for it.
hope this helps!!

all those have to do with the parking lights, maybe a bad switch?

are you talking about the headlight switch? How about the parking laps fuse? was there a alarm installed before?

We replaced the direction light, running light , hazard, high beam thing on the left side of the wheel. Not sure what it's called, the stick thing.

the parking lamps fuse is still good, along with headlamp fuses.

there is that factory alarm installed.

Have you checked each socket specifically, the license lights, tailight, park lights and marker lamps...ive seen in cars at the wreckers some happen to be melted but it is rare. a short in one of these will cause the fuse to blow and the interior lamps according to the diagram runs off this fuse too. it is definetly a short somewhere, oviously somewhere tricky.

Did you get nthe diagrams i sent you.

i got the diagrams and printed them out. thanks!

i will check the tails and license plate lights but what do i do if I find something?

If one is melted, or damaged just cut it off and tape the ends of the wires until you can get another socket...I had my headlight out a few nights ago to tighten a clamp on the radiator and seen the wires for the fron marker lights are in an open area, that will be a good place to check to if you havent already. On that circuit is the two amber lights beside your headlamps, the tailights, the two small side lights on your front and back bumper and the license lights. If you happen to come across a damaged wire shorting against the metal tape it up really good and move it to where it may not rub again.

hey did you ever figure out the problem?

Half my cluster in my 03 works, the HVAC and shifter lights do not work. Seen PLENTY of 03+ J's like that, My 02 is fine. Only seems them bad in 03+

Mine was shortly after I bought the car, all lights did not work, I HIT THE top of the dash pad above the cluster 1 time and half the cluster works. Been like than for 2 years now.

After seeing it in SEVERAL J's I've came to the conclusion that it is a factory defect.
