I was looking around the forums for this and I couldn't find any answers. I just wanted to know how hard it would be to put a push button start in my sunfire. I just wanted something simple like where u have to put the keys in the ignition but instead of turning the key to start I would push the button. Also would this mess with the gm theft system on the car?
You would need to put the key in the lock cylinder, turn it to ON to disengage the steering wheel lock and power the circuits in the car... then you would hook up the start button to the starter circuit (as it's already in your ignition harness).
It's not that difficult.. you just need to run wires to the ignition column. But considering you still have to put the key in and turn it forward... what's the point? It's not really that cool if you still have to turn the key forward the two notches.
That's the only way I figured it could work without having to do anything major to the wiring. The key in the ignition is also a good idea so no one can just push the button and take off in my car. Does anyone know any other way this could work? Without needing the keys maybe?
To work without the keys.. you'd need something to bypass the Passlock first of all.. a DEI 555L module would do the trick. Then you'd need something to defeat the steering wheel lock. You could take apart the column and break off the lock pin, but I'm not advocating that.. then you'd need something to provide power to the ignition circuits, fuel pump, etc.. I don't know of a kit that does this easily, but perhaps someone else knows of one. I know that remote start kits do this function, but you still need to put the key in the ignition to drive the car...
Plus, you have an automatic, so you'll need to defeat the shift-lock interlock. That could pose a safety problem, as you'd be able to move the shifter out of park with no safety... and between gears (not just drive to neutral and back) without pushing the button.
Thanks man
ill try giving it a shot. Maybe I can figure out a way to power the circuits without the key. If I can't do it I'll just wire up the button to the starter circuit and just use it with the key. I just think it would look pretty cool to have that
