any of you do this? i figure if i can port the rear deck rather than look around scrap yards for fold-down seats and have it still sound good then why not right? the seats in my '94 Cav are fixed. i have a 1.6 cu/ft box with 1 pioneer TS-W2000SPL, 4" diam port looking to tune to 30Hz, meaning the port will have to be 20.25" in length. so i was thinking i could make up part of the 20.25" by going through the rear deck with the port and into the box. just an idea. anyone ever try anything like this?
Thanks,
KMC

IF i was going to port my rear deck...this is how i would do it...
the subs would play into a sealed chamber...which is completely sealed up except the top, which is open and sealed against the rear deck completely. 100% of the bass will be directed into the cabin, and not lost in the trunk.

looks complicated. so looking from the trunk that would be a stealth design kind of deal? looks kick a!@ for spl.. would that give decent SQ as well? the TS-W2000SPL isnt great for SQ, but its better than i expected for an SPL sub. or maybe i would be better off to just swap for the fold-down seats eh?

i'm just running the 1 sub for now off a Kenwood eXcelon KAC-X810D, currently 800RMS @ 2ohms. maybe this time next year if i pick up another w2000SPL i'll wire them into a 1ohm load and draw 1000RMS. but for the sake of 200W, i'd be better off with another X810D, run both amps 1 per sub at 2ohm each... but then i'm into way too much bass and no front stage, lol. so i think i'm just kinda content with the 1 sub for now. i find has (although not spectacular) decent SQ for an SPL sub.
i had it in my sunbird to test it out, it does get quite loud and i like it.. but the '94 Cavalier doesnt have the fold-down seats like my sunbird does, so it's either doing the sealed off trunk thing or swapping rear seat setups. still not sure what i would like to do yet:S

sndsgood wrote:aim the subs forward and have the port come out of the top of the box and end at the rear deck hole. try that and see how it comes out.
and i dont have to seal anything off for this? if i dont have to seal anything off then i can give it a shot, nothing to lose really

yeah, that makes sense. will try that. i've never had a setup where i had to seal off the subs from the rest of the trunk, i was usually to either have a hatchback or have cars with rear seats that fold down to let the air flow, lol.

I also have a 2nd gen, and have been playing with the idea of a sub mounted to the rear deck. I've not been as big a fan of ported enclosures, prefering sealed instead. My idea is to mount the sub in the top of a sealed box & mount the box directly to the underside of the rear deck.
The difficlt part of this is that it requires somewhat major modifications to the rear deck structure:
(1) you need to cut out a hole large enough to accomadate a 10" or 12" sub
(2) you need to make a metal frame to attach to the now weaker deck to reinforce it and to support the added weight & stresses of mounting the box to the deck.
The final touch to my idea is to design a covor above deck that would closely resemble a typical hood scoop. This cover would fit over the sub, making it very similar to a slot-loaded design.

PS: wysiwyg, hope ya don't mind me borrowing your graphic! : )
no problem.
but my drawing WAS a sealed enclosure..not a ported box. the subs were just playing into the chamber (which is as large as the box itself) then the bass was re-directed into the cabin.
Here's a few more pics..the box will actually have 4 chambers, two which act as the sealed portion of the enclosure, and the other two will "pre-load" the subs and force all the bass into the cabin.
The rear deck needs to be cut to match the holes in the box, then after it's installed use expanding foam to seal up around the ports and the metal...then also where the metal and rear deck meet.

With the ports being so close to the rear deck window, does that present a problem for the rear glass seals? I would think that with the added, close, constant bass pressure they could eventually break loose... Or am I just being paranoid?
