Wastegate Dump? Atmospheric or re-circulate?
Sunday, August 13, 2006 3:26 PM
So Im about to install the wastegate, just a 38mm, and I was wondering what I should do, just dump the wastegate into the atmosphere(straight down via a pipe) Or Re circulate it back into the exaust after the turbo?

What are the advantages and dissadvantages of each?

Thanks for all the help!

Mostly noise, but it can effect wastegate response depending on back pressure in the exhaust system. Atmospheric is the most performance oriented, but is extremely loud.

how much boost are you going to be running?

I've ridden in boosted cars with WG's dumped to atmosphere, and it sounded awesome.

The only problem is, if you're only running say 6lbs of boost, its going to be open a LOT more often then if you were running 13lbs, for example.

daily driving, can you stay away from 6lbs of boost? I know I can, but cops beside you may not like it if you happen to not notice them.

edit:

yeah its also very loud, and would get annoying if you're driving it all the time.

if you drive this thing daily do not just have it dump .... tie it back into the exhaust... it sounds like crap! if you dont.. i was stuck with an open dump for 2 days and i have never walked to so many places... i couldnt STAND to drive my car... and if i did i went VERY light on the gas so it wouldnt spool and open up

Its not my daily driver, although id like to be able to take it out on the weekends and not have to worry about a noise violation, I was thinking, what if I ran it thorugh a small motorcycle muffler? Just an idea, but it would alow it to flow pretty good, quiet it down plenty. if that sucks then Ill just run it back in the exaust, the exaust is only a 2.5" downpipe back to the firewall then flanges to 3.5" straight back to the axle and has a turn down. No cat, no resonator.

And yes it will be set for 6PSI

its going to be stupid loud already, so whats more racket, right?

especially with just a turn down and nothing else.

I've got 2.5" DP to the firewall, and 3" all the way back with a magnaflow muffler. Its still too loud for daily driving.

if you're set for 6psi... route it back through the exhaust

remember though, the less bends in your dump tube the better.

I am going to be running 16 psi tuned. I had ran for 10 psi for a long time. I had it routed into the exhaust, its good because you never really hear it. But I am going open dump now for the new setup...

its personal prefference really

I have my wastegate opening straight into the atmosphere.......Loud?.....Yes.....but it sounds insane....you hear the turbo spool and then the gate open....i love it...i dont think i would ever want to route it into my exhaust but, thats just me...

i have a pipe routing straight to the ground

actually i believe i heard, (only heard because i've never read the book) but in Maximun Boost, there is something about the dump tube being 18in long with a slash cut into the exhuast, will yeild the most gains...

note that this is just hearsay, and i don't know exactly what it said, and no i don't believe it exactly because it's probably one of those things that need to be tuned, like an intake or exhaust mani runner length to see any gains from it

I miss my open dump.....

Its awsome to see the look on the driver's face, in the car next to you, when the dump opens.......

Well I think Ill just run it with a atmospheric dump for now, its gona drop down right next to the downpie so if i cant deal with it i can always dump it back in later.

Im going to pick up the pipe today to weld in the wastegate flange to the manifold.

something about exhaust tips having an angled cut on th exit actually nets you greater flow (could free up power maybe?)

theres a reason most tips are slash cut.

im only running 7psi for now and i have a tial 38mm and it is externally dumped out of a tube down toward the downpipe ,yea its loud but that is half the fun . it sounds like its one pissed off sunfire.

SpyderWizard,
What size turbo are you running?

I vote for open dump

a friend of mine has a 91 Talon TSI, and when his wastegate opens up, flames shoot out from underneath the car. it's pretty awesome
