Noob Intercooler Question

What is the point of a intercooler? Can you run a intercooler system without a turbo? i know that it will have "no" effect and be pointless but what if you ran it as a air intake. where would you run the piping?

Put on your fireproof suit quick

But no, Not only is a non turbo'd intercooler setup pointless, but it will cause a great restriction on your intake and cost you some horsepower.

Plus i know i would laugh in your face if i saw you driving around with a intercooler and no turbo

Or, we can give him a non-dickhead answer.

What is the point of a intercooler?
---Cools the air down after it comes from the turbo

Can you run a intercooler system without a turbo?
---If you wanted to. It'd be like an intake (see below). If you meant run a turbo without an intercooler, you can but your car is gonna get erally hot really fast and your IAT's are gonna get really high. I think you rish detonation when they get too hot (im no expert though)

i know that it will have "no" effect and be pointless but what if you ran it as a air intake
---an intercooler cools the air and the only thing cooling it is the air so you would be basically cooling air with air, doesn't really do anything but adds restriction

Someone usta make an intake that would have the filter right where an intercooler should go. But once again it actually hurts performance. And I would assume there would be a much greater chance of hydrolooking your engine with it.

Another question... could you have a intercooler set-up without a turbo just to run a NX Intercooler system?

a turbo compresses air. If you have gone through highschool chemistry class you'll know that the Ideal Gas Law states that given all other variables are the same, as a gas is compressed it temperature increases. A turbocharger is a compressor. When it compresses air, it then sends it into the engine. That air is compressed, thus way hotter than ambient air. An intercooler is put into the plumbing to cool off that air before making its way into the engine.

a naturally aspirated car would not benefit from this since the air doesn't see any increase in temperature until it gets compressed by the piston inside the combustion chamber. There is no way to cool that off via intercooler.

Intercoolers are for forced induction cars. Period.

I personally bought one of those "intercooler" looking intakes like the Civis have, but whether or not it'd just grab the heat off the raod, or actually grab cool air, who know? I'm gonna test it out though. I bought the Intake "intercooler" type from ebay for like 70$. I know it's stupid, but i'm gonna try to hide it behind some mesh so you dont see it as well. Good luck with the fire suit and grba one from ebay if you want to have an intercooler style intake. Piece!

In a high compression engine an alcohol/water injection can make air temps less than ambient because of the evaporation, and there 's no restriction. That would be a better choice for na.
