I blew my ecotec 2.2 earlier today and I have some questions about a few things
for the Eagle crank that comes without the timing ring can I use the one on my car already?
Who makes a good set of bearings for the ecotec?
Can I use stock pistons? What kind of HP # are they good to?
So far I'm planning on an Eagle crank/rod combo possibly stock pistons. ARP studs, Cometic Head gasket etc.
also if anyone has the ecotec build book on a server or if someone could email it to me @ brandon_gathye@yahoo.com
Thanks!

Good luck finding anthing other than stock for rod bearings.

4 Cams...32 Valves...5 Liters...This Could Get Fun!
Get some forged pistons. The stock ones are good until 300 hp or so.

I have been told "no" apparently the design of the crank only allows the ring to be "cast" in which is the difference between the 2 part #'s eagle has. This crank is made for people running a stand-alone.

New GM bearings work fine. Thats what im using

Putting stock pistons on top of eagle rods is a complete waste, you will have a crank that is good upwards of 1000hp, rods that are good till 700 or more, and pistons that are good until 2xx hp? You have just built a motor good for 2xxhp.

Save up and but Wiseco's

PS
If your cruising e-bay to save money I would look to buy eagle rods and wiseco pistons and use your stock crank. You are not going to make enough power to justify an eagle crank.

You can take your eagle crank or stock crank to a good machine shop have them turn the crank / weld on it to allow it to take a different bearing ie: honda and use the carrillo rods which allow the honda rod bearing but that will NOT be cheap....
For what you are wanting to do, stock oem bearings will be good enough....
If you need pistons, rods, GM Racing products, arp studs, or head gaksets feel free to e mail me sales@carcustoms.net and I will do my best to get you a nice combo deal togeather.
Stick with a stock head gasket, period dont ask why.
Get eagle rods and wiseco pistons, period
do some valvetrain work if you want but thats optional.
my motor has comp turbo cams, arp studs, eagle rods and wiseco pistons and was a beast at 18 psi.
mine also had the stock headgasket and new gm main/rod bearings.
trust me thats all you need.
the cometics are known to have a problem sealing on the ecotec, I know of 5 or 6 different people that tossed em for a stock 2 layer mls gasket, if you want something better get a stock lsj head gasket which is 3 layer mls

So what exactly blew. Whats wrong with it. The stock pistons tend to be the weakest point on your engine especially if it runs lean. So I would upgrade those for sure. I would also do the rods and leave the stock crank.

Preaching the gospel, Phil is, subscribe to it.
I guess the only real thing I would do for the head is some stiffer springs, the stock oem springs cant really take 15+ psi because they cant operate efficiently at high pressure. IIRC ls1 springs fit in with minimal machine work, or you can spend 600 and get the ferrea valve/spring seat, and spring combo

I cant remember if hahn came across it or someone. I may be completely wrong, I will send PJ in here, he may know

eagle rods,
wiseco pistons,
ferrea springs/retainers,
oem bearings,
oem headgasket.
arp studs
stock crank and sleeves are good for 500+hp.

Eagle Cranks that are ALL over on Ebay were cast with out the ring ... found out the hard way! but was able to swap them out with a guy who was going to run a crank trigger.
If you reuse your stock crank and need it re sized, send the crank to a shop that grinds them and polished them, Tell them to grind it down to 1.888 inches! this will alow you to run a Clevitte # 1663 H or HX ( this is rod bearing GM put in there 1000hp engine!) I believe the last time i checked it was for a honda or something ...
Go with GM main bearings 12591092
Replace the pistons and the rods! Eagle rods and wiesco pistons if you want a lower budget or slap out the money and get a Manley or Carrillo rods and who ever makes the other pistons
If you want that beast to flow get the GM Sportsman head ( flows better then the patriot, but costs a little more ...) and i guess you can deside what valve train to get ...
Sorry to thread jack,
Karo: did you by any chance happen to get any more info on that Sleeved block?
We really dont know his goals, but I seriously doubt he needs rods and pistons that are capable of 800+ hp. Eagle rods, and wiseco pistons are capable of at least 600. Like John H said, these ecotecs are amazing for a budget build and still slam out 300-400 hp. 300 on a stock head 400 on an aftermarket one.
Like I said, I speak from experience, listen to my first post, several others have done it. If you do what I said, and add the patriot head along with the cams, rods and pistons and studs youre going to have to worry about the trans/drivetrain before that motor ever going due to power and you can build it for under $2700 (w/o head)

I understand this ^^^^^^ but there are some people out there that like certain brands ( my brother will only wear nike shoes when addids will do for 1/2 the price, and will only go with Ohio Cranks for his 350 sb build when an egal one will cost 400 bucks less .... ) And maybe he is ... which we dont really know this.
^^ well not trying to be a dick so dont get offended but not every is stupid enough to wanna fork out an extra 400 bucks on something like that.. its not like wiseco pistons are made by apc or obx.. those parts arent needed unless you plan on making 650-700 hp + theres not 1 street car on this site that makes that

^^ understood!
I still want to see a 650 + hp cavy run on the streets
eco budget builds are the @!#$ lol wasnt hahn running just rods pistons and some stiffer springs on there first setup that ran mid 11's?

like wise. but the clutch alone for that would cost around 2k. once you pass that 450-500fwhp mark... it gets really expensive.. the next step up isnt as easy as bigger injectors.. or more boost

i copied adams setup with the difference being 8.9:1 wisecos and a spec IV clutch to their 9:1 JE and a Clutch master IV clutch.
only reason i did on both was due to price. CM clutch was over 200 more and the JEs i believe were around the same.
