problem reaching boost
Tuesday, July 15, 2008 10:27 PM
ive put a turbo on my cav, this is the first turbo ive ever dealt with so im still new to problem solving.

here is what i have: 2.4ltr LD9, 5 speed
t3/to4e turbo
external wastegate with 8 psi spring
2.5 inch charge pipe, and its intercooled
2 bar map sensor
37 lbs injectors
hptuners.
2.5 inch exhaust
ect...
the rest isnt important to list really

my problem is while driving im only hitting 5-6 psi in first gear, then in second gear i hit 6-7. and then third im finally reaching my full 8 psi. During the peak psi im hitting, it sounds like the wastegate is dumping, but the spring is rated for 8, and im only hitting 5 in first gear and then it dumps.
i have my boost controller dis-connected and running souly off the wg spring rating(8lbs). ive checked for any boost leaks and seem to have none. Does any one have any suggestions on what would cause different boost levels in different gears?

thanks

where do you have the vacuum source for the wastegate??

there will be pressure drop through the intercooler, so dont forget that.

no vac lines are running to the watsegate for now. im letting it run off the wastegate spring (8lbs spring)
im pretty sure my controller is no longer working properly because with it hooked up i can only reach half the boost i get with it not hooked up and doesnt matter how much i turn the boost up with it, it still cuts me short. So i just removed it untill i can get another one and will just run with the wg spring for now.

You do know how a wastegate works right? You still need a VAC source to it to run propper spring pressure...

when i have my controller hooked up, i have it hooked to the nipple on my turbo, then to the controller then to the wastegate.
but when i have my controller hooked up im only hitting a few psi of boost before the wastegate dumps. i open the controller up all the way and im getting the same responce as to having nothing hooked up to the wastegate at all, so i just never reconnected the vac lines back up becuase im getting the same responce when i have the controller hooked up and fully open.

oh well, i thought id see if anyone had a suggestion i could try, but ill just tinker around till i fix it or get fed up and sell the car as is.

How about hooking the wastegate up to a signal like it's supposed to be before you give up. Maybe it's the owner and not the car....

do this and it will probley fix it! niple off the turbo it's self, then to the wast gate end of story. just one easy simple van line. For a now just avoid the boost controler. let us know how ya make out.

found out what the problem was. during my exhaust install im guessing the mechanic took my vac line off the wastegate to give him room to run the pipe thru, and when he re-intalled the vac line he put it on the wrong nipple on my wastegate. i switched it over and am now hitting full boost with ease. now its off to get a proper tune.

thanks,
jeff

He was trying to cover his ass for being stupid and blamed it on someone else. You shoulda seen it coming. It's never anyone's fault that their car doesn't work right...it always has to be someone elses.

Yea....

Its OK to ask for help and thats why suggestions were given... but come on, lol.

Have to agree with Hypsy on this one.

I thought it was fixed.
when i switched the location of the vac line on my wastegate i reached full boost in every gear. And thats when i called it a night and later posted on here saying it was the wrong nipple, which i honestly thought it was and wasnt trying to put the blame on someone else
i had it set up as the line going straight from the turbo to the wastgate and no controller and i was hitting full boost and beyond if i didnt let off the gas. so the next day i thru my MBC in the line to turn the boost down so it dumps at 8. well the controoler didnt do anything. it still wasnt dumping and i was exceeding the boost i was aiming for. but never posted on here saying i was wrong. i forgot about this untill i had emails saying someone responded to the thread.

I went online to double check how to do the lines, and the way i had before was the correct way of doing it(side nipple of wastegate). and the way i had it reaching full boost was not the correct way, even tho i was getting more boost that way.(it was on the top nipple of the wastegate)

so before when i couldnt reach full boost here is how i had it hooked up and all the things i tried to switch around to get it to work:
line from turbo to controller, controller to the side nipple of WG. with controller all the way closed i would only reach 2 psi in first, then 3 psi in second and third gear.

then i opened the controller up completly and watched my guage to make sure i didnt go over 8 psi. But first i hit 4 psi, second and third i was hitting 6-7 psi. sometimes third would dump at 8psi.

then i tried doing a straight line from the turbo to the wg, and it did the exact same thing as having my controller hooked up and fully open.

ive tried putting the controller on backwards and nothing.
tried going from a different source rather then the turbo, i T'd off my FPR line and it had the same effect.

thats when i thought the diagram i was using online could be in-correct. sometimes theres bad info on the internet, so i switched the location of the vac line on my wastegate from the side nipple to the top. and sure enough i got full boost and more, so then i came on here saying it was in the wrong nipple from my mechanic.

But, while i was under my car, i noticed that on my exhaust there is one spot where the pipe was bent to the point of caving in badly on itself. so im guessing the exhaust isnt flowing well enough thru the pipe and is causeing pressure in my manifold and so the wg dumps before i reach 8psi ??????

its going in tomorrow to get that spot fixed, and im also getting an electronic boost controller in any day now. so once both are fixed and on the car ill see if im still not reaching full boost.

hope this clears up everything. and like i said before im still very new to the whole turbo thing and still am learning as i go along. Everything else is working great on the set-up, its just the not reaching boost thing i cant figure out.
