where to go from here...
Monday, April 12, 2010 7:44 AM
hey guys, i have 00 ld9 with 88xxxkm on it, and i thought it's be fun to boost... boy was i wrong.

this is my story, two years ago a friend pointed out a decent turbo kit for my car so i bought it. we put it on and everything was good. i idled it down to nova scotia hoping to get it tuned, so we got the hpt set up for it and being a nob i didn't know it was leaking somewhere when i took it out and ronched on it i thought it was my dumptube noise and being to rish so it was falling on it's face..... but i was wrong.
i was told my WG was leaking so i bought a new turbosmart WG... didn't fix the leak, then i thought it was off the head cause i had a warped manifold or something, so i bought a new log style manifold, still didn't fix my leak. so i figuared it must be the inlet gasket where the turbo and mani bolt up, i bought the thickest gasket i could find off of a rb25 nisian skyline and old 300zx. ** p.s just a side note **i'd recamend that gasket to eveyone btw you can get them right from nissian....sorry movign on... anyways needless to say it's still leaking somewhere. so my question is where do i look next.

my thoughts are maybe off the mani again, i used the stock gasket (new one of course) for the mani would it be leaking there. it starts blating right before the boost gauge gets to 0 at like -5 psi and i mean BLAT. or would it ever be on the intake side? it doesent built boost at all it just make a whole lot of noise. would the turbo it's self be leaking should i try another turbo..... i'm worse then a ricer at this point, all noise no tq ...ugh i am just almost ready to burn the damn thing it's been 2 years in the making and all i want to do is drive my car and make it go faster then stock so any help would be MUCHLY loved! from me and my car! it's not the charge piping there all tight and it would build boost and then drop off right? anyone got ideas?
thanks in advance jbo.
kyle

i really don't think it's my charge pipe but i will tripple check it. and it's a t3 supper sixty, turbosmart WG and a greddy BOV.

post pics of your setup so we can see the configuration. it could be many things. who did the tuning with hp tuners? you said when the vacuum gauge reads -5 to 0 the engine falls on its face?

no it falls on it's face if you just say F*** it and ronch on it, it's got nothing to do with tuning it tho. there is a big leak witch sounds exhaust related and i for the life of me can't find it!! and pics are on my website i'm at work or i would.... www.cardomain.com/id/kylephillips911

You should take it back to that shop or to another show and have it tested for boost leak.

cant see much of your setup. where is your boost pipe from the turbo? did you adjust your blow off valve? it may not be shutting creating a boost leak. how did you hook up your bov?

Sounds like you've gone over all the possible leaks... and to me it sounds like the w/g is malfunctioning & staying open, thus bypassing the turbo and making a lot of noise (specifically if you have an atmospheric dump). Now you said you switched W/Gs so this would cancel out a faulty one... but if its being caused by a line not being connected correctly to it, this could explain it. I would go over your vacuum lines, and find a good diagram or instructions and make sure all your vac lines are connected properly as well as not leaking due to a break or having popped off.

yeh i thought i had to checked them all too... lol guess not, as for the WG it's hooked up with one line off my turbo into the top half of my turbosmart WG. and the other hole is open witch id use for a boost controler correct?( it's not on yet) my BOV is hooked up with the white plastic line unnder the hood by your brake towers... not sure what it's called i just know it's a vac line and works as far as i can tell. the bov is working just not pushhhhing lol if i start out easy and bring my gage to 0 and wait for the turbo to spool a lil and shift right befor the BLATTT sound starts it sounds good and makes a blow off sound, and sum times it chutters kinda like a tis tis tis tis tis noise. but when i icnore the BLATTT and shift i can here it blowing off so i think it's working just fine but the boost isn't staying closed in the system. it's being sealed in untill it starts to make +psi numbers

is the stock gasket off the head ok to use that is the only place i can think of that it would still be leaking from. unless the turbo it's sealf is f'ed up somehow. when i tore it down the other night i checked it and it was tight with no wobble and spins ok, not like a brand new one but it spun with out to much effort. i just don't know anymore. for it to be my charge pipes the turbo would have to build boost for them to leak.. it doesn't get a chance to build anything... and here we are again at the problem lol.... maybe i'll try making a video...
thanks again

the wastegate boost line needs to be connected to the bottom hole of the wastegate. the top hole is a vent. if the boost line is connected to the top hole then during non boost(vacuum) the wastegate will open or partially open creating lag or no boost. under boost the wastegate will never open causing an over boost condition and most likely blowing your motor sky high.

the bov needs a vacuum signal coming from in the intake manifold

ok thx i'll check on my lunch break and see where there connected but i think they are connected right i'll get back to ya. thank you Joe

so i checked and yep the vac is on the bottom hole of the WG and the bov does indeed have a vac source off the intake manifold... they are both checked.
so lsts just say the new gasket worked between the turbo and manifold.. where can i look next?

is the bov adjusted correctly? look at the bov. at idle the valve should not be open. what turbo are you using? is it new, rebuilt or used-non rebuilt. have you checked the turbo? pull the turbo filter off and run the motor. you should see the compressor wheel spinning. are you 100% sure you dont have any boost pipe leaks?
Re: where to go from here...

i am pritty sure it's not open at idle or if you rev it, i am useing a used non rebuilt garrett t3 supper sixty. this weekend i will tear it down again. i will also go get my new couplers and t bolts and put them all on and i'll add dish soap so they really don't want to leak lol. then i guess i will be back to update. but if i am tearing it down yet again for the 4th time should i just take the manifold off and put another gasket on it too? should i put the stock one and a made one on or just the made one? or two made ones with gasket maker inbetween? no gasket maker lol iv just tryed everything id really like this to be my last time and if this doesn't work it's gotta be my turbo!

so just a lil update, i tore it all down and got everything plained and put it back together and guess what IT.......didn't work. so i still had a noise. i simpley gave up, so i took it up the road to a performance shop. they were as puzzled as i was. the car sounds fine other then that BLAT! so when my other cars trany decided to spill its guts all over the road on the weekend i was forced to go get that blating car back but the owner of the shop happened to be there this time and we went for a ride, he couldn't figure it out, all this noise and no go. in a last attempt we pulled the vac line off the wast gate and guess what for two years my car hasn't been working right cause my wast gate was opening to fast WTF lol all the work iv done and gitting so frustrated all over that simple problem FML lol anyways
needless to say the car finally boosts and i have a boost controller in the mail, i need to make my dump tube dump in to my exhaust to quite it up after 8psi and then she is all ready for another tune and a dyno .
Happy Boosting
Kyle

Do you have the correct WG spring for the pressure you want?

Re: where to go from here...
Tuesday, June 08, 2010 8:54 AM
haha ohh i was upset but inthe end i am glad i....well he finaly figuared it out lol.
as far as the wastgate spring yeh i orered i thought a 8 lb spring but meh i got a manual boost contoler on it's way. but the new problem is i keep poping a charge pipe off maybe i should weld that one that keeps popin.... any input? it's the one right in my bumper so it's a pain in the ass now eveytime it pops.

get it bead rolled at a metal shop or you could possibly weld a bead around the outside of it and use good t-bolts

Where you getting it dynoed/tuned?

Re: where to go from here...
Wednesday, June 09, 2010 5:09 AM
well i thought it was a coupler turnes out when i was ajusting my BOV i cracked the seal......the one that when its being welded and heats up you can turn it to where you want it and when it cools down it tightens again yeh that one...now it just turns all the time so i jb welded the out side of it so it doesn't turn but i still have no pressure building up, maybe i should try takeing the bov off and doing the inside now to?.... ugh one problem after another. any other tips on what to do there? i checked my pipes amd don't see any that are blew off, so it's gotta be leaking out of that flange eh?
i am gitting it tuned at raven auto sports in hali hes who i went to last time, always treats me 100% and yes iv got the t bolts almost all on i am just waiting for 4 more to show up.

go to JD racing in New Brunswick... Danny is great at tuning. Everyone from my area goes to JD racing even though Seagull Autosports is closer.

Danny (JDR) also holds several records for sport compacts and has tuned cars from civics to twin turbo vettes to S/C cavaliers. He knows his stuff.
