hello,
wondering how difficult it is to make a custom turbo? besides all the pipes. what else do yuo need to complete the turbo? any suggestions would be great? plus is it cheaper to make your own turbo rather then buying one. if i dont make one i will be buying one from frank at cavalierextreme.com thanks in advance....

if you dont know a lot about the whole turbo system then i suggest getting a kit. if you think you know what you're doing, search, search and search again and learn as much as you possibly can before starting the project. if you know every aspect of how turbo systems work and what kind of mods are required to run it properly then it'll be much cheaper to build your own kit. check the FAQ at the top of the forum for a list of what other parts you'll need to complete your custom kit.

go to Borders and pick up a copy of Maximum Boost by Corky Bell... read it, learn it, memorize everything.

I just installed a custom turbo on my car. Its a garrett t3/t4 turbo. It is oil cooled without an intercooler which will be installed later on. I have the turbo, turbo manifold, the oil feed and return, intake pipe, modified dipstick, and downpipe fabrication. I have the 2.2L OHV engine though. You having a z24, im not sure how it would be setup on there, but after the whole building it custom, it was around $1800 to $2000. You would be better off buying the kit. You can check out my car if you want to look at it(down below). Good luck with your shop after college.

As for which is better/easier, a kit for sure.
As for which is cheaper/more of a learning experience, it's definitly a custom setup.

If you're doin' it to learn about all this turbo stuff, I'd say custom. More so if you're in college. Because if you're anything like me, you're poor.

Anyways, I'm not really the guy to talk to about a "custom" setup. I can give you a few pointers on a "junkyard" setup, but I'm really any sort of expert on that, either. But I'd be glad to help out =P

i am always available for help on junkyard / custom setups. i wouldn't really turn to HMT (HomeMadeTurbo) for a lot of application-specific questions, because most of them are honda guys and we're in two different worlds. However, those guys are really good at giving you pointers on cheap stuff, what to look for, what works and doesn't work, etc.
