Anyone with a SAFC please help!
Sunday, October 16, 2005 1:31 PM
My car wont stay running because of the safc. I disconnect it all together and it runs but really rich (normall for the injector size). I followed the directions to the T. And I have also connected and reconnected it three times. The car starts up, then after a couple seconds it just shuts off. More info is in my other post "car starts up then shuts off." Any ideas would be great because the only thing I can think of is the safc is bad internally. Anyone with a SAFC please help!

Where did you make the connections at?At the computer? Also make sure all the connections are soldered. You do have it on the pressure setting right?Make sure its on 05in and 05out.I never had my car shut off because of my s-afc.The only thing i could think of is you have the map sensor input wires switched.Good luck.

The ground and power wires are at the computer. The map sensor in/out, tps, and tach are at the sensors. I triple checked all the connections. I have it on the pressure setting at 5 in 5 out, 4 cyl, arrow up and right, graph scale at 2.0, 7000rpms and +/- 15%. I dont understand why it just shuts off when I connect the safc. Without it, it stays running just fine. I seriously think I have a faulty SAFC. Because just before it shuts off, it doesn't go lean or rich on my wideband. It just flat out shuts off like it would if you turned the key off.

Is it brand new?Once i was driving and my safc fell off the dash board and the car started running rough.I took it apart and the wire harness was loose. Its a little white connector,i just pushed it back in and the car ran fine. There are just 4 screws that holds the back cover on.Its worth a shot.Either that or send it back for a new one.

It is a used one. I bought it from Jeremy Kneirem. He advertised it here on the org. I will check that. Thanks.

i thought that was for the motors with no tach output. like when you hook it up by the idi. cause there are only 2 channels for ignition. but using the signal from the tach place in the fuse block.

That is for the tach. Post up a wiring digram for the SAFC. I'm looking at hooking one up and need to know what I need to do.

I'm not fully sure about the 2.4s but the ECOTECs run off a 2 coil system and it won't read the full RPM range without you setting it to 2 cylinders BUT my car still started up and ran fine so that couldn't be the issue why his car isn't starting.

I say it's the installation.

Right not I'm all motor. I was running rich more on my top end...like real bad, to the point where I would hit 70 and it would just lag like crazy. I remember I raced my friends Civic, we were neck and neck than I hit 70 and then he was gone like he had nitrous cause my car was just lagging like nothing. I bought the SAFC-2, tuned it down and it did help.

As far as being under boost with the SAFC-2, I don't know how effective it is and won't know cause I'm swapping it out for an Megasquirt.

I am all motor now, with hopes of boost within the next year or two. Would I benifit from installing it now? Hit me up if you ever want to sell it..

From my research, an SAFC isn't all that great when it comes to tuning with boost.

Its a hit or miss ordeal. Some people have luck with it, some don't. It has helped me tune my idle and high end, but its still a band-aid. It is a fine tuning tool. You will need a FMU or AFMU to get your fuel to your needs, AFPR to help with idle issues and then the SAFC to fine tune your "curve".

yeah Its preety much a given with that your gonna need more than safc. if you havent figured that out by now you should probably stay away from boost (not directed towards anyone)

NJ have you figured how to get rid of your code yet. I thought I rember hearing you say that You tried the resistor trick and it didnt work.

I never did do the resistor trick but I found out that the code only comes on at start up and goes right off when you start moving. It's the Low voltage code. I'm not worried about it cause I'm getting rid of my SAFC very soon for a Megasquirt.

I am still N/A, yes but in a month or so, I won't be. I was going for the GM charger but GM screwed me over so I'm not going with it...turbo it is. HP & the reflash...I have no idea when they are coming out anyways. If I go with Megasquirt, I'm overiding the computers fuel management and doing my own. Only thing I would use afterwards is the HP tuners device to change shift points...that's about it.

ok well its on then. I told you that I was going turbo at last years meet And mine sounds like it will be ready about the same time as yours. it will be interesting to see what kind of numbers your more built motor will make. (I know there are more varients.)

Yeah I can't wait either. Tuesday, I'll be either ordering a manifold or intercooler (depending on my check maybe both). Every week I should be ordering a new part and have everything completed by the end of November. I so can't wait...

A turbo would be nice if I had an eco. Oh well, just wondering about how you tuned your SAFC II. I am assuming that you took it to a dyno or something af the sort.

I originally took it to a dyno. The bad installation leaded me to have it re-installed and I lost all my original information and tried to re-tune it myself. When I originally took it to the dyno, my only engine modification was camshafts, than after the re-install I had a new P & P head installed...so far my best setting is at "0" (stock settings) because I'm no long running rich.

By the way, I'll be selling it once I'm boosted.

It was rather easy to use but the only hard part is trying to figure out if it was benefiting you or not because I didn't have a wideband. Not a real way to tune your car but hey, didn't have the money to buy one so "F" it.
