i know i'll probably get flamed...but oh well

i just installed my b&m short shifter on my 96 cavy. and i was needless to say not that impressed. i am not saying it was junk by any means but not worth the money in my opinion....my opinion is a little scewed possibly b/c i am comparing it to linkage shifters maybe but still not that great. giong into 1, 3, 5 it seems pretty short but 2, 4 still seems like quite a throw. i do however think it stifined the shifter up a little which is nice but not $120 nice. kudos go to car customs for getting it to me quickly though, great company to do buisness with.........

I have both styles..... 95-99 and 00-05..... and love them both. Both shortned the throws quite a bit compaired to stock, and made it a bit more 'sure' feeling when shifting.

I'm not sure how it shortned your shift to all the odd gears, but not the even? Your saying the distance from 2nd to 3rd is shorter then 1st to 2nd, or 3rd to 4th? Your statement makes no sence at all. Or do you go from neutral to each gear?

in either case.... I flame you...... cables cant be compaired to linkages in any shape or form. Apples to Oranges.

while i am driving i do not stop at nuetral no.......after i installed it i was just moving the shifter around to get a feel for it and i noticed that to go into 1, 3, 5, it was a pretty short movement and to the lower gears 2, 4, not so much of a short movement. and yes i know they can't be compaired, i just assumed (wrong of me) that if it took b&m (a great company) this long to come out with this shifter and charge this kind of money for it, that it would be a world of difference. i guess it is just to bad that gm did not use linkage b/c the short throws on linkage shifters are awesome.

i would buy another one in a heartbeat. my jaw hit the floor when i opened the instructions and saw how detailed everything was. it also makes it feel alot smoother compared to how the stock on felt.

mine felt great shorted my shifts thru all the gears. Maybe you just expected more out of it for what you paid for it. Personally I raced a few times against my buddy in his mustang with the stock and then again right after i changed the shifter there was a gain cause i was quicker thru the gears. My buddy even thought it was a great inprovement over stock.... even still to this day he still sez its the best mod ive done so far and I have to agree.

I love mine personally, after being overseas for a couple of months, pulling the car out of storage the for the first time was great with that real short tight throw. People who've driven my car have commented on how they liked the shifter. Like said above, very good instructions, and was modestly difficult to install (took me quite some time, but worth the effort). I think once you get used to it, you'll realize after driving a stock shifter how short the throw's really feel.

I wonder if maybe you've streched your cables? Maybe that's why your not getting what you expected. Take into account how many km's you've on your cables and how those cables have been treated? Just my 2 cents............

yeah maybe i will have to try the raplacing the cables and see if that helps at all........

and z speed cavy i think you are correct , i think that i was just expecting more out of it.

thanks for the replies

Sounds like your cables aren't adjusted right.... it should be the same throw to 1st as 2nd, 3rd as 4th. If the cables aren't centered when you install it, the mid-point would be off... exactly as you've described.

well, i am aware of where the cables run b/c i did 5 speed swap into this car last year....so i am not worried about that, and lenko how would i go about adjusting them?, i just stuck the cable back into the bracket the same way they were before....i am not horribly worried about it at this exact moment, just the next time i sell some parts that i have lying around i will go buy the cables and toss them on there and see what does........

I set the the trans in neutral (under the hood) and set the shifter in the middle. Then I clipped the cables onto the rods. Mine has the same distance throw from 1st to 2nd... and 3rd to 4th. But if you set the one cable further forward (than the middle), then it would cause what you're describing.

you should probably adjust the linkages that hook to the shifter thats probably why some throws are short and the others are long

so I flame you for faulty installation and making a post about it

my B&M shifts evenly and very nicely. I love it

It might just be me, but I think installation of the component is pretty relevant to how it operates.

if everyone else loves theirs, but you have a problem with yours, then I think maybe somewhere during installation something got screwed up. did you try adjusting the linkages where it connects to the shifter assembly?

i love mine, works perfectly through all gears. i couldnt believe the diff in shift legnth. little play here and there, but its a very nice improovment over stock.

sounds like linkage, but im no expert... best bet is to get it checked out, may turn out to be worse, or easier for that matter...

Are they supposed to feel more solid going into gear? I can't decide if it's supposed to be that way, in which case hooray. Or if something's not quite right. Even though when I installed I had the cables within a millimeter or so of where they used to be.

yep.. I suggest checking your cables and how they hook into the shifter, you possibly have them off a litle bit, and even a little bit my throw it off a decent amount, my B&m is amazing, I still need to adjust my cables after 20,000 miles cause its a beyotch to get in first but I cant compare it to anything else for us in terms of quality and ease of installation.

I am not saying you cant do it, but just maybe you made a mistake, cant hurt to oveerlook everything

I have a 2001 Z24 with the B&M unit. It was one of my best mods. Stock J shifter is sloppy (the pre 2000 is the worse stock). I have driving a pre2000 B&M unit. Much tighter than stock, and shorter!! The B&M products are one of the best products ever made for a J hands down. Looks, quality, performance.
