2.4 auto, any stronger trannys that bolt up?
Monday, April 03, 2006 5:55 AM
hey i just got my engine back and im worried since its a 4 speed auto that thr tranny will go since i have this rebuilt done and am adding nitrous to the engine. I should be mid-low 13's so im wondering is there any trannys like out of the 3.4 grand ams or 3.8 grand prix's that can bolt up to the 2.4 4 speed 40t40e or what? also, do they make some kind of adapter plate so they CAN bolt up to my engine?

I don't know the answer to your specific question.... but I do know that my buddy who works in a transmission shop says the 4T60E is GARBAGE and that they are constantly repairing or replacing them. He also says the 4T40E is a far superior transmission, and they hardly ever need servicing as long as you keep it cool (a good quality trans cooler) and change the fluid/filter often.

I must be lucky I have a 97 Z24 auto, and I drive the piss out of it. I'm always pushing my car to the limit. I know it is a bad idea but I like to go through the gears manualy. I am always buring out. But I have never had any tranny or motor problems, and my car has 124k on it.

My car has two speeds, fast and faster.

I dont believe there's much that will bolt up. The 2.4 has a different bolt pattern. All the V6's and the 2.2 have the same bolt pattern, so those can be swapped. I dont think the 2.4 can.

97+ GTP trannys are good. (4t65E-HD) Couple of minor things, hold a ton of power stock, and a huge improvement over the 4T60.

Well, your diff will probably blow soon enough due to the burnouts. It's pretty hard on them. But lots of GM cars have what's called "Abuse Mode" and "Torque Management" programmed into them. Torque Management will pull timing, reducing power, when the transmission shifts to help prevent damage to it. Abuse Mode kicks on pretty much any time it detects that you're doing something that can cause damage to the drive train. Burnouts would be a good example. Once again, it's cutting back the power to keep from breaking stuff (or the real point probably is to keep them from having to replace stuff under warranty cuz you beat the piss out of your car)

^^^Thats true, and I'm sure that is the reason my trans is still alive.

the 4T40E will take lots of power and punishment. Lenko beat the snot out of his silver car with gobs of happy juice and slicks and it didn't break. would happily do run after run and bottle after bottle at the track.

Bingo. Get a tranny cooler, and look for an LSD of some sort....
