2nd, 4th, Reverse suddenly no worky!!!??

Hey fellaz,

Slight problem. Was leaving the gas station on my way home from work just now....went to shift into second from first and instead of feeling the shifter engage, it just slipped back really fast as if it's neutral. Feels completely "neutral sloppy"... no engaging whatsoever. 1st, 3rd, and 5th engage with a little bit of feeling for it, but the whole bottom of the "H" moves back and forth like neutral and is non-functioning!? Which little part in the shifter did I wear out, or is it worse?? Thanks in advance fellaz.

P.S.
I dunno how I'm gonna back outta the driveway in the morning!

ShOoff:

Thanks dude, that's what I assumed, but didn't wanna sound dumb if I was wrong
You think that is a one day job for the dealership shop? Surely my warranty is gonna cover it eh?

Anyone know what kind of job a shifter cable replacement is, and is it covered under an extended warranty? Gotta make a trip this weekend...

easy.. tried it today. undo them from the tranny.. 1 pops off other you need a 15mm socket. The take your center console out, pull the carpet back on the passenger side and walla! Pull those cable out but first remove the firewall gromet. Its a 1,2,3 job. 45min tops!

Well, dealership has had my Cav for a week now... getting the runaround. Been confirmed that my warranty covers the job, but now it's just the "drag-ass game" I guess... GEEZE.

Peace fellaz,

UPDATE:

Aight...so Mr. Alex (my svc. rep.) hollaz at me today... "Well Sir, we got the shifter cables in on Friday, had 'em tear it down further on Sat. and discovered that not only are your shifter cables totally tore up and a mess, but your entire shifter assembly is cracked in multiple places. Now, our warranty rep. has inquired as to whether or not you've abused this transmission, and your aftermarket shift knob actually suggests so, but I denied any knowledge of such acts and thus far you are still covered. I've never seen the Getrag malfunction in such a manner, and neither has the warranty rep. But anyways, at this point you are still covered, the shifter assembly has been ordered, and you should have your car back no later than this Saturday."

Now, boys and girls, considering my '04 has just made 2 yrs. old, and mileage-wise, is still under FACTORY warranty, I pose a few main points/questions:

1) I drive my Ecotec platform as hard as the next guy, but a complete cable/shifter assembly failure???
2) If it IS such a failure, why was I able to drive to the dealership with 3 gears still functional???
3) Is an orange Ichibahn shift knob THAT much of a warranty issue as to mention it to me on 4 seperate occasions via telephone conversation??? CHRIST, if I woulda known the friggin' shift knob was such a big deal, I woulda got the factory knob/reverse lockout outta the trunk and stuck it back on!!!

Please JBO, a few comments to set my mind at ease...criticisms also welcome, I have an open mind.

Peace y'all,

inDgo

FYI, shifter cables and shifter assemblies are not covered under factory warranty. "Bumper to bumper" my ass.

The shifter assembly is mostly made of plastic. If you look at it the wrong way, it'll crack. Mine was cracked... I got it from a wrecked Sunfire when I did my 5 speed swap. I installed a B&M short throw shifter, which happened to replace most of the plastic crap with metal pieces... a little better.

Despite the cracks... I haven't had any problems.... and since I drag race and autocross, i guarantee I drive my car harder than most!!!

Your cables may have merely been out of adjustment. It's kind of odd that they'd go and replace the whole assembly.... especially when it's good ol' stock JUNK!

No. If they try to deny warranty because of it. Keep in mind that it is the LAW that they will have to prove that said part caused the malfunction of whatever else. Granted, i'm not in the business, but I really dont see how simply having an aftermarket shift knob is grounds for saying that you 'abused' the transmission. Having rubber caked around the wheel wells and down the underside of your car probably is.

As far as not being covered under factory warranty? I wouldnt think that a shifter and cables is considered to be a wear and tear item.

The "side-to-side" actuator was physically broke off. I had an arrangement made with the dealership to where they'd cover 50% of the repair. They agreed that if I purchased a B&M shifter to install myself, that they'd simply replace the FUBAR shifter cables and I could install my own shifter. Well, upon examination of the shifter assembly, I discovered that the side-to-side actuator was basically broke in half...so if I did order the B&M unit, I couldn't have installed it cuz of the broken actuator (which obviously is used by the B&M unit). SO... in the end I got the car back today, with a new shifter assembly and shifter cables all installed, for a "50%" reduction in cost which amounted to a grand total of $344.86. I know I got screwed. Dude charged me for 5 hours of labor when I know damn well it doesn't take that freakin' long to install the aforementioned components. They just knew that I was in need of a GM patented part, and that they could charge me whatever they wanted....so they jacked up the labor costs to make sure I paid a lil' bit extra so they could come out ahead. Needless to say I'm just happy to have my car back and am glad it wasn't $500+ like they originally wanted to charge me. Dealerships are so fulla $hiT.

Peace,

I have this same problem in a 97 sunfire GT I just picked up. Is it the same info(as you're all talking about an ecotec engine an tranny and I have the 2.4) for the repair?

Also where can I find the shift cabling for lower than $281 CAD. (quote from repait tech)

I would like to get this fixed asap as i plan on taking this car to the east coast and want to have all the bugs worked out before then!!!
