opinions: life of GM tranny fluid..when to change?
Sunday, July 02, 2006 6:35 PM
i have a 98 z24 manual. i was told that the gm tranny fluid lasts for the life of the car. it never needs changing.

is this true? i have a 98 that i beat the living hell out of. im wondering if i should change the tranny fluid and how hard is it?
thanks,

It would not hurt to change it.
I have a '96 5 speed, 138K miles, original everything even the fluid. I am changing it this week, but it has gotten me this far.
I know guys that change it every 20K miles!

thanks,

Keep in mind that these are the same people (dealer) who want to sell you a new car. I always chg. mine (automatic) at no more than 20K intervals. You can probably go farther on a manual, but if you beat the crap out of it, I'd say no more than 50K sounds about right.

rock on with the 96 tranny. i got 150k miles on mine .

i have changed the fluid about 4 times. i have tried different stuff, from auto tranny fluid, to penzoil syncromesh, and GM syncromesh.
I have found that GM syncromesh works the best/ shifts the best. so i stick with that( due for a change here soon). that is what i recommend.

changing it- there is a drain plug on the drivers side of the tranny, down towards the bottom, u will see it. i want to say a 17, or 18mm bolt. the bolt head faces the drivers side tire if i remember.

just like changing your oil, tricky part is getting the fluid back in. use a funnel with a hose on it get something that fits over the funnel end, and into the hole in the tranny where the dip stick is. (black fuel line tubing, or clear stuff, or what ever can be had cheap at a local hardware store)

you will need exactly 2 quarts. i put a little more then 2qts in mine.

The Penzoil Syncromesh containers fit in there; Cut the tip off, take the seal out, put the little red cap back on, crawl under the car, stick the container up there and pull off the cap. Piece of cake.
