Ok guys I need your help asap. I have the opportunity to buy a few low mileage 2.2 transmissions. I have a 99 2.4 which is boosted and would like the option of having a bit lower gears and my 2.4 tranny is now shot.
The question is will the 95-99 2.4 "bellhousing" simply unbolt from the 2.4 tranny and bolt onto the 95-99 2.2 isuzu transmission? I know the guts of these trannies are interchangeable but i've heard rumors that the housings are the only difference besides the gear ratios. Anyone out there have any word on this? It looks to me like the housings definately do come off the trannies, but i need to know this before I go and buy a 2.2. Thanks everyone.

The bellhousing doesn't unbolt from the tranny, all the guts are assembled to the housing.
I'm pretty sure all you have to do is take your 2.4 housing, take out your 2.4 gearsets, swap the 2.2 gearsets into it and you should be good to go. While your at it, get yourself some machined spiders from an older tranny, ie. a Geo Storm SOHC. I'm replacing mine right now, got a storm tranny w/ 67K on it for $100 at a scrapyard.
Make sure you have some big torx sockets before you start, or you'll be running to Sears once you get into the tranny.
Good Luck

The Geo Storm GSi tranny will give you a FDR of something like 4.10
Does anyone know if the Storm tranny bolts up to the 2.4LD9 block? Or is this the same deal as the 2.2 and you have to swap the guts out???
I've found quite a few decent donar trannies, now i'm just trying to figure out the best combination and easiest route.
